- Week six of the 2013 season starts a series of five of six in-region matchups that will determine the postseason location for the West Georgia Wolves.
Entering this stretch of games, the Wolves are 3-0 in the South Region with victories over Mars Hill, MIles and Shorter as region opponents. The stretch begins with one of West Georgia's oldest rivalries in traditional Gulf South Conference power North Alabama.
West Georgia comes into the weekend with a 4-1 record on the year and the Wolves are 1-0 in GSC play. The 4-1 record is the best start for a UWG squad since 2001. North Alabama is 2-2 on the year with wins over Miles and Shorter. The Lions are 1-1 in GSC play with a last-second loss to Delta State.
The Wolves have a balanced offensive attack this season, averaging 203 yards rushing and 191 yards passing on the year. The bulk of the UWG touchdowns have come on the ground, with 12 rushing scores as opposed to six of the passing variety. West Georgia is averaging 34 points per game on the year.
Defensively, West Georgia has been rather stingy, giving up 16.6 points per game on the year to go along with giving up just 304 yards per game of total offense. In three games in 2013, UWG has held an opponent to less than 300 yards in a game, including this past weekend against Point, where the Wolves allowed 186.
Leading the way for the Wolves is senior running back
Quan Jones, who needs just three yards to become the 16th running back in school history to gain 1,000 yards in a career. He has 375 yards on 72 carries this season with five touchdowns. In addition, last week against Point, Jones had the longest play of the year thus far with an 83-yard touchdown pass from
Dallas Dickey.
Jones is one of two backs for the Wolves this season with at least 300 yards on the ground, as junior
Seth Hinsley also has 306 yards this season on 40 carries for a 7.7 yards per carry average. Hinsley also has three scores on the ground.
In the receiving department,
Bobby Burum leads the way with 17 receptions for 214 yards and three touchdowns, followed by sophomore
Joey Eliezer, who has six catches for 193 yards and two touchdowns.
