Football Preview: The Miles Game

Carrollton, GA - For the second straight season, the UWG football team enters the second game of the year with a 1-0 record. But this year's came under a much different circumstance, as the Wolves beat Mars Hill, which finished the 2012 season as the No.2 team out of the South Atlantic Conference, on the road.

The win was a total team effort in a 31-21 win against Mars Hill, as the Wolves scored a pair of offensive touchdowns, kicked a field goal, returned a blocked punt for a touchdown and returned an interception for a touchdown.

West Georgia's offense was led by senior running back Quan Jones, who carried the ball 19 times for 114 yards and a touchdown against the Lions. The 19 carries tied a career high for the four-year player and the 114 yards was a career-high. His previous high was 19 carries for 89 yards against St. Augustine in 2011.

But it was the offensive line that was impressive, as the big guys up front imposed their will in the fourth quarter against Mars Hill. Led by seniors William Wright, Brandon White and Cortez Hoskins, the Wolves' front five dominated the Lions' defensive front in a 12-play, 70-yard, six-minute drive to put the game away.

An athletic, aggressive and youthful defense ruled the day on the opposite side of the ball, led by a gaggle of redshirt freshmen. Alex Armah and Rocky Capobianco, both redshirt freshmen from Dacula, were both leaders on the day, as Armah had a team-high 10 tackles and Capobianco had six tackles and returned an interception for the first touchdown of the year for UWG.

Miles didn't fare as well in their season opener last Thursday, as the Golden Bears lost their first game of the year by a 42-7 count to the North Alabama Lions.

The Golden Bears looked to be in good shape, as senior quarterback David Thomas tossed a 75-yard touchdown strike on the first play of the game. But that was the bulk of the offense for Miles on the night, as the Bears finished with just 264 yards of offense in the game.
