Carrollton, GA - The 2013 home opener for UWG football was a solid night for the West Georgia contingent, as one of the largest crowds in school history witnessed the Wolves grind out a 31-7 victory over the Miles Bears at University Stadium.
Led by a second-straight 100-yard game from senior #
Quan Jones#, the Wolves rushed 49 times Saturday night for 296 yards and three touchdowns. Jones had a career-high 19 carries for 114 yards last week against Mars Hill, but he took that a step further against Miles, rushing 23 times for 139 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.
But it wasn't just the offense that was scoring on the night, as senior safety #
Donovan Jackson# struck for the sixth time in his career with an interception in the second quarter. That makes him the 16th player in school history to intercept at least six passes in a career and it was the 25th time that a UWG defensive back has returned an interception for a score.
In a somewhat similar fashion to what they did last week against UNA, Miles took the opening kickoff and took 14 plays to drive 66 yards. Floyd Graves scampered in on an option from three yards out and the Wolves trailed 7-0 with just over five minutes gone in the contest.
The score remained the same for the rest of the first quarter, but late in the period, the Wolves began a march that ended three plays into the second quarter with Jones' first touchdown of the day, a two-yard plunge up the middle. The big play on the 10-play, 60-yard drive came on the opening play of the march, as #
Dallas Dickey# hit #
Bobby Burum# for 17 yards.
On the ensuing possession, the Bears looked to be putting together another drive until Jackson stepped in front of a David Thomas pass for his first pick of the season. Forty-eight yards later, the Wolves had taken the lead for good, as Jackson took it in for the score.
After forcing another punt. Dickey and the UWG offense went on another march. Thanks to two big plays and a penalty, the Wolves went 50 yards in four plays as Jones picked up his second score of the night with another two-yard score. Dickey had a 20-yard run on the drive and Jones a 19-yarder to push the Wolves down the field quickly.
The third quarter was scoreless, but the Wolves were driving as the period ended. The drive stalled at the Miles 17 and senior #
Mark Bardenwerper# booted a 35-yard field goal to make the score 24-7.
With just over five minutes left in the game, junior linebacker #
Tyrell Adams# helped set the nail with an interception at his own three yard line. He returned the interception to midfield and the offense took over. Six plays later, #
Seth Hinsley# took advantage of a huge hole in the middle of the defense, scampering 28 yards for the final score of the night.
Jones led the Wolves with 139 yards on the ground, followed by Dickey with 74 yards on 12 carries and Hinsley with 73 yards on 11 carries. Jones now has 852 yards rushing for his career on 179 carries, while Hinsley has 189 carries for 908 yards as the pair seem to be in a race to get to 1,000 yards.
The UWG defense was equal to the task on the night, allowing just 260 yards of offense. Defensive lineman #
Nathan Teter# led the defense with seven tackles on the night, including 3.5 for a loss and a sack. #
Carlos Hutton#, Adams and #
Clay Horton# each had five stops in the contest.
West Georgia will stay at home next weekend, taking on 13th-ranked Midwestern State as a part of the Gulf South Conference/Lone Star Conference Classic.
