Football Preview: The Midwestern State Game

Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves are two weeks into the 2013 football season and UWG has two wins that were fairly a total team effort in both weeks. It marks the second straight season where the Wolves are 2-0 to start the year, with the level of competition raised thus far this season.

The Wolves opened the season with a road trip to Mars Hill, NC, where West Georgia scored on offense, defense and special teams to take a 31-21 victory. This past weekend, the Wolves opened the 2013 home slate with a dominating 31-7 victory over Miles, a team that has been at or near the top of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the past two seasons.

Against Miles, West Georgia rushed for more yardage that Miles gained the entire night, as the Wolves picked up 296 yards on the ground while the defense gave up only 268 yards of offense.

The star of the show offensively for the Wolves has been senior running back Quan Jones, who has 42 carries for 253 yards on the season. He is currently second in the GSC with 126.5 yards per game on the ground and is tied for the conference lead with three rushing touchdowns.

The UWG defense has stepped up this season as well, as the Wolves are giving up 14 points per game thus far, which is good for first in the conference. As a team, the Wolves have four interceptions, also leading the GSC and two of those have been returned for a touchdown.

The Wolves are also playing well on special teams, with punter James Dugan leading the way in the Gulf South Conference with a 45.6 yards per punt average.

Coming to Carrollton this weekend will be a very dangerous team out of the Lone Star Conference in Midwestern State. The Mustangs were the Lone Star Conference co-champions a year ago and are coming off of a trip to the NCAA tournament.

Midwestern State comes into their second week of the season with an 0-1 record after falling to Tarleton State 27-24 last week. The Mustangs came into the season ranked 13th in the preseason coaches' poll nationally and 12th in the D2football.com poll.

The Mustangs had 338 yards of offense last week against the Texans, including 259 yards through the air. Two quarterbacks, Jake Glover and Shavodrick Beaver, combined to go 17-27 for 259 yards passing and three touchdowns. On the ground, MSU had just 79 yards in their 2013 debut.

On the opposite side, Midwestern State's defense gave up 198 yards rushing and 182 yards passing to Tarleton State.


The Coaches
West Georgia is coached by Daryl Dickey, who is in his sixth season at West Georgia. He is 15-37 at UWG and has an overall record of 43-52. Midwestern State is coached by Bill Maskill, who is in his 12th season as the head coach at Midwestern State. Maskill has an overall record of 88-34 at MSU and has a career record of 101-43.
