2013 Gameday: The Mars Hill Game

Carrollton, GA - Gameweek is here, as the 2013 football season begins for the West Georgia Wolves this weekend in Mars Hill, NC, as the Wolves take on the Mars Hill Lions in a battle of Gulf South Conference versus South Atlantic Conference.

The Wolves open the 2013 season on the road at Mars Hill as UWG tries to start 1-0 for the second straight year. Mars Hill enters the season coming off a 6-4 record in the 2012 campaign and returns 18 starters; including 10 on offense and eight on the defensive side of the ball. The Wolves, however, will try to improve from last season's 3-7 record, returning a solid corps of upperclassmen on both sides of the ball.

On offense, the Wolves return nine starters including junior running back Seth Hinsley, senior receiver Bobby Burum, and three seniors on the offensive line. Defensively, UWG returns senior defensive back Donovan Jackson and senior linebackers Bobby Liggins and Adam Strakose.

The Wolves also feature four players that have received Pre-Season All-GSC honors. Senior offensive linemen Brandon White and William Wright, the aforementioned Seth Hinsley, and junior return specialist Denarius Appling were all named to the Pre-Season All-GSC Team as voted by the league's six head coaches. Wright and White have also been named to multiple pre-season All-American lists. Additionally, the GSC coaches voted West Georgia to finish in a tie for fourth place in the conference this season.

The Lions of Mars Hill had six players listed Pre-Season All-South Atlantic Conference. Offensively, wide receivers Dimitri Holmes and Deunta Jennings, offensive lineman Nick Allison, and running back Shaikel Davis each earned all-conference recognition. Defensive end Troy Harris and linebacker Jasper Mason made the list for the defense. Harris was also named a pre-season All-American on multiple lists. As mentioned before, Mars Hill finished 2012 with a 6-4 record , good enough for a second place finish in the conference. The coaches of the SAC have voted Mars Hill to finish fourth in the conference in 2013.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM on September 7 at Mars Hill's Meares Stadium. Fans can get more in-depth information, including the PDF Version of today's notes, at the 2013 Football Gameday page.
