Carrollton, GA - The 2013 season is in full swing, and three games into the year, the West Georgia football program is 2-1 on the year after suffering their first loss of the season last Saturday at the hands of 25th-ranked Midwestern State.
Week four marks the opening of Gulf South Conference play for the Wolves, as West Georgia will head 50 miles north to Barron Stadium in Rome, GA, to take on second-year GSC provisional member Shorter. The game will be the second in the history of the series between the two programs, with the Hawks handing UWG a devastating 24-20 loss on Senior Day at University Stadium last fall.
West Georgia comes into the weekend with a 2-1 record on the year, with wins over Mars Hill in week one and Miles in week two before last week's setback at the hands of the Mustangs. The Wolves are averaging 331.3 yards of offense per game on the year, with 193 of those yards coming on the ground. West Georgia is outscoring opponents 30-22 on the year.
UWG is led on the year by senior running back
Quan Jones, who has 283 rushing yards on the year in 57 attempts with three touchdowns. He is averaging 94.3 yards per game on the ground and last week against Midwestern State was the first time he failed to eclipse 100 yards in a game this season.
Shorter comes into the week after suffering a tough loss at the hands of top-ranked Valdosta State in their GSC opener last week. The Hawks are 0-3 on the season with an 0-1 record in GSC play. Shorter lost their first game to Division I Charleston Southern, then fell to Mars Hill in week two before the setback against VSU last week. The Hawks are averaging 15 points per game and are giving up 35 points per game.
The Hawks' offense is averaging 222.0 yards rushing on the year, led by quarterback Eric Dodson with 242 yards rushing this season and Bradley Moon with 191 rushing yards.
