Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves open the 2014-15 season at home in the GSC/SIAC Challenge presented by Wentz Financial, taking on the Claflin Panthers. The Wolves and Panthers have locked horns once before, in the opening game of the 1990-91 season, when Claflin got the best of then West Georgia College by a 69-62 total.

This year's event features two teams from the Gulf South Conference and two from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, with Lee and Morehouse opening the two-day event on Friday at 5:30 p.m. West Georgia and Claflin will then follow at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the tables will switch and Claflin will play Lee in the early game at 4 p.m. followed by an in-state clash with West Georgia and Morehouse at 6 p.m.

Cooney Enters Eighth Year as Head Coach

Michael Cooney has been at the University of West Georgia now for more than 20 years, spending the last seven years as head coach of the Wolves. In his career, he has been famous for bringing in Division I transfer talent to West Georgia, and this year is no different, as he introduces
Alex Abreu, a senior guard from Akron, to the UWG faithful.
100 Wins and Counting
At the end of the 2013-14 season that saw UWG go 18-11, Cooney won his 100th game as head coach at West Georgia. In seven years at the helm, the Wolves are averaging 14 wins per season under his tutelage, and his teams have had four seasons with at least 15 wins. The 18 victories last season were the second-most under Cooney.
Against the SIAC
This weekend's games against SIAC opponents will mark the 10th and 11th games against SIAC opponents under Cooney. The Wolves are currently 8-1 against the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with Cooney as head coach.
Tickets for the GSC/SIAC Challenge presented by Wentz Financial
Entrance into The Coliseum with be $8 for each day of the tournament. The cost is the same for one game or two on each day, but tickets to Friday's games will not be valid for Saturday's contests.
