Carrollton, GA - One thing is for sure to UWG fans through the first three games of the West Georgia men's basketball season, and that is the fact that the Wolves can score points. For the second-straight night, the Wolves scored at least 100 points in a 115-90 rout of Point University at The Coliseum Monday night.
Playing their third contest in four nights, the Wolves looked to have their legs under them, shooting more than 50 percent on the night from the floor and using a solid offensive attack to wear down the Skyhawks. Jovany Austin was big early in the game for West Georgia, as he picked up his first double-double in a UWG uniform just after halftime and he finished the night with 23 points and 14 rebounds.
But in the first eight minutes of the contest, the Wolves and Skyhawks were locked in a neck-and-neck battle, as West Georgia held a slim 18-17 lead with 12:22 left in the opening period. But over the next five minutes, West Georgia would power past Point, and with a
Thomas Higginbotham free-throw at the 7:05 point, UWG had a commanding 38-17 advantage.
The onslaught continued over the next 12 minutes, culminating with a power dunk from junior
Marcus Dortch with 27 seconds left before halftime that put UWG up by a 58-38 tally heading into the locker room at the break. Deonta Stocks led the Wolves in the first half with 14 points, while Austin had 11 points and nine boards.
In the second half, senior guard
Alex Abreu heated up, scoring the first five points of the half to push the UWG advantage out even further, as the Bayamon, Puerto Rico native had 10 points in the second half. But Austin also continued to dominate, picking up his 10th rebound of the game for his first double-double at West Georgia at the 18:58 mark of the half.
Five different Wolves scored in double-figures on the night, led by Austin with 23 points and 14 boards. Deonta Stocks had his third-straight 20-point effort while Abreu and
Deontre Brown added 16 points for the cause.
Emory Bernard was the fifth UWG player in double-figures with 11 points.
West Georgia moves to 3-0 on the season will now have nine days off until next Wednesday evening, when Carver comes to town for a holiday basketball treat. Tipoff for that game is set for 7:30 p.m.
