Wolves win in Memphis over CBU

Carrollton, GA - For the first time in the 13-game series between the West Georgia Wolves and the Christian Brothers Buccaneers, UWG walked out of Canale Arena with a victory, taking down CBU by a 67-61 count in Gulf South Conference action.

Jovany Austin and Marcus Dortch each hit for 19 points on the night, including a 5-of-9 shooting effort from Dortch and an 8-of-12 effort from the field from Austin. With team short on players, the Wolves had five different players with double-digit minutes, including at least 37 minutes from four of the five players.

"In our wins at Montevallo and Delta State, we got good minutes out of Jovany, but that didn't happen in the loss on Sunday," said head coach Mike Cooney. "But tonight Jovany was huge for us and I can't say enough about his work ethic."

For the most part, in the first half, the Wolves controlled the game, as Marcus Dortch lit it up from three-point land and the Bucs struggled to get going offensively. The Wolves built an 8-1 lead early on a pair of three-pointers from Dortch and continued to stay hot, leading 13-5 on another Dortch three-pointer just before the first media timeout of the half.

The Wolves continued to push, leading by as many as 13 points in the first half, but CBU defended their home turf very well in the waning seconds of the opening period. The Bucs closed the half with a 15-8 run that pulled CBU to within a four-spot of the Wolves, heading into the break with a 34-30 lead.

Deonta Stocks and Dortch led West Georgia in scoring in the first half, with Dortch knocking down four three-pointers for 12 points and Stocks poured in 10. West Georgia shot 46 percent in the first half while CBU shot 40 percent. For Christian Brothers, Sidy Sall hit 4-of-6 from the free-throw line and had eight points while Trey Casey had nine points.

Once CBU tied the game in the second half, the game was a dogfight for the rest of the evening. West Georgia was able to push their lead back out to an eight point advantage once in the second half, but every time the Wolves would hit a couple of buckets in a row, Christian Brothers would answer right back. In the final minutes however, it came down to free-throw shooting, as the Wolves have not been the best free-throw shooting team this year, coming into the game at 64 percent.

But in the final minute of the game, Alex Abreu hit two free-throws, Austin hit a pair of free-throws and Stocks hit 1-of-2 to put the game on ice for the Wolves.

Stocks was the only other UWG player in double-figures on the evening, scoring 13 to go along with the 19 from Austin and Dortch. Taylor Cochran led UWG in rebounding with six boards on the night. For CBU, Sidy Sall had 22 points and 14 rebounds and Trey Casey added 18 in the losing effort.

West Georgia now heads to Jackson, Tenn. to take on the Union Bulldogs as Gulf South Conference action continues on Saturday afternoon. The women's game is set to begin at 3:00 p.m., followed by the men at approximately 5;00.
