Carrollton, GA - A tough beginning to the Gulf South Conference schedule continues for the West Georgia Wolves on Saturday afternoon, as UWG takes on the Union Bulldogs in GSC action. This marks the fourth road game in the first five conference outings for the Wolves, who are 3-1 in GSC play heading into Saturday's matchup.
UWG vs. Union
This is just the fifth meeting in the history of the series between the West Georgia Wolves and Union Bulldogs, as the series began when Union became a provisional member of the Gulf South Conference in the 2012-13 season. This year is different, though, as Union is now a full member of the GSC and is eligible for Division II postseason play for the first time in the history of the program. UWG leads the series 3-1, with the only win for the Bulldogs coming in the first meeting in Jackson. West Georgia won the most recent, beating Union 63-62 on a late free-throw from
Thomas Higginbotham with 11 seconds left this past February in Jackson.
UWG Breakdown
West Georgia comes into the game with an 8-1 record on the seasona and a 3-1 spot in Gulf South Conference play. The Wolves are the second-most proficient scoring team in the GSC this season for the first time after a pair of games with scoring in the 60s. UWG averages 87.2 points per game and teams are scoring 78.7 points per game against them.
Union Breakdown
Union has a solid 9-2 record on the year and is 3-2 in conference play. Along with West Georgia, the Bulldogs are one of three teams that average more than 81.7 points per game on the season.
Battle of the Perimeter
Based on the stats thus far this season, the Wolves will need to ramp up their perimeter defense to be successful in Jackson. The Bulldogs have six different players who have at least 10 three-pointers on the year and shoot at a 38 perent clip. West Georgia is better from beyond the arc, hitting 41 percent of their threes, but the Wolves have made nearly 30 less shots (83) from the three-point line.
