Carrollton, GA - Gulf South Conference play begins this weekend, and for West Georgia, the Wolves will get the longest road trip of the season out of the way right off the bat, taking the Mississippi GSC road swing. The Wolves will take on Delta State at Walter Sillers Coliseum in Cleveland, Miss. on Thursday evening at 8:30 p.m., then will play MIssissippi College on Saturday afternoon.
UWG vs. Delta State
This Saturday's meeting between the Wolves and Statesmen will be the 42nd in series history, with Delta State holding a 25-16 advantage over the Wolves. West Georgia has won four of the last six, dating back to the 2011-12 season when the Gulf South Conference took away the East/West divide when the Arkansas schools left.
Wolves' Offensive Explosion
West Georgia's guard-heavy offense in 2014-15 continues to score at a blinding pace, fueled by a hot-shooting team that hits field goals at a 50 percent clip on the year. The Wolves are averaging 95.4 points per game this season, led by Deonta Stocks with 21.2 points per game and
Alex Abreu with 18.6 points per game.
Guards and Forwards
The 2014-15 version of the Wolves is one that features a high-pressure defense focused on a slew of guards on the bench. But four UWG players are averaging double-figures on the year, including a pair of forwards. Jovany Austin is averaging 13.8 points and 8.0 rebonds per game while
Emory Bernard scores 10.8 points per game and pulls down 6.0 rebounds per contest.
Sharing, Take care of the ball and Defense
Three tenants to live by in the world of basketball would be those three, and the fact that UWG is doing them in abundance has a lot to do with the scores so far. The Wolves have a 86-57 assist-turnover ratio while opponents have a 69-88 ratio.
