Carrollton, GA - Road victories in the Gulf South Conference are not easy to come by, but the UWG men's basketball team picked up two road victories this weekend in the state of Mississippi, including Saturday's 92-81 victory over the Mississippi College Choctaws in the first meeting between the two teams since the 1993-94 season.
Senior
Alex Abreu had his lowest scoring output of the season on Thursday evening at Delta State, and the point guard from Bayamon, Puerto Rico took it out on the Choctaws on Saturday. Abreu scored 31 points in the game and was 10-of-14 from the field, including 7-of-11 from three-point range. He was also 4-of-4 from the free-throw line and has now hit 12 straight free-throws and is hitting on 90 percent of his shots from the charity stripe.
But depite Abreu and sophomore Deonta Stocks' 20-point effort on Saturday afternoon at A.E. Wood Coliseum, the Wolves had to hold off a furious Mississippi College rally in the final minutes of the contest.
After a 9-2 run from the Choctaws to open the game, West Georgia went on a 14-2 run, fueled by a 10-point outburst from Abreu and with 12:26 left in the first half, the Wolves held a 16-11 advantage in the contest. MIssissppi College kept the UWG lead between three and five points for the next three minutes, but a three-pointer from Abreu sparked another run, as the Wolves went from a 20-17 lead with 9:44 left in the half to a 30-18 lead with 6:54 left in the period.
The Wolves kept the lead at or near double-digits for the final seven minutes of the half, and went into the locker room at the break with a 46-36 lead. While the focus was on 17 first-half points from Abreu, Stocks quietly had an impressive half as well, as he had 13 points on a 3-of-3 effort from the three-point line.
In the second half, the UWG lead stayed between seven and 12 points for the first 13 minutes of the period, but with 6:45 left in the game, Tory Rice began to lead a comeback for the Choctaws. That run lasted until the 3:47 mark, when a layup from MC's Rayner Fredrick pulled the Choctaws to within at point a 77-76. Thirteen seconds later, UWG guard
Marcus Dortch hit a layup, drew a foul and then hit the subsequent free-throw to put West Georgia back up by four. The Wolves then pushed the lead back out to 13 in the final three minutes of the game to put the game on ice.
The Wolves were on fire from three-point range, hitting 15-of-26 from beyond the arc, with five different players hitting treys in the game. In addition to the 31 points from Abreu and 20 from Stocks, Dortch and
Taylor Cochran also scored in double-figures for the second-straight game, with both players scoring 11 in the game.
West Georgia now has eight days off for exam week at UWG before returning to the court at The Coliseum. The Wolves will face off with nationally ranked Alabama Huntsville on Sunday, December 14 at 4 p.m.
