Carrollton, GA - The UWG defense came to play Saturday night at Sloan Stadium in Fairfield, Ala., as the West Georgia Wolves pitched a shutout against the Miles College Golden Bears, powering the Wolves to a 26-0 victory.
The Wolves defense forced three turnovers, had five sacks on the night and even scored on a safety, helping West Georgia to a road victory. Miles had 244 total yards in the game, marking the second straight game where the UWG defense has allowed less than 325 yards.
The first three minutes of the game were just as crazy as the matchup in Sloan Stadium two years ago, as the Wolves sack Miles on the first snap of the game and junior defensive end
Darrius Caldwell recovered the subsequent fumble. The UWG offense sputtered with the ball at the 12 and the Wolves were forced to attempt a 32-yard field goal, but the snap was high, giving the Bears the ball at their own 27.
Dallas Dickey and the UWG offense then woke up and drove right down the field, marching 50 yards to paydirt and finishing off with an 8-yard touchdown from Dickey to
Beau Dugan.
Hunter Heck converted on the PAT and the Wolves led 7-0 with just over five minutes gone in the game.
Miles moved the ball just over the 50, but the Wolves defense stiffened, forcing a punt. After the punt, the offensive line took over, as UWG began taking up chunks of yardage and the Wolves quickly moved downfield. Dickey completed a 21-yard pass from the 28 to Shaq Hall that put the Wolves inside the 10, then
Seth Hinsley pounded it in from two yards out two plays later and West Georgia led 14-0.
After the turn of the quarter, the Wolves began another march that ended with a missed 47-yard field goal, giving the Bears the ball at their own 30. Miles began to methodically march down the field, and West Georgia's defense found themselves in the shadow of their own end zone. On third down, junior safety
Carlos Hutton intercepted the ball and kept the Bears off the scoreboard with a huge play.
The Wolves and Bears had an exchange of punts and the Wolves went on another march that resulted in points, as UWG pushed inside the Miles 10 with less than five minutes left in the second quarter. But the offense came up short and head coach Will Hall went back to Heck, and the kicker was true from 25 yards out, making the score 17-0 with 3:33 left in the first half.
That was how the half ended, with the Wolves leading 17-0 heading into the locker rooms.
Seth Hinsley led the Wolves with 14 carries for 80 yards in the opening half, and the UWG defense had three sacks and three forced turnovers.
Hinsley moved up in the record books on the second play of the second half, as he rushed for nine yards, which put him ahead of Steve Duncan and Mathis Curry and into ninth place all-time on the rushing list. But that was about all that either team could get in the third quarter, as neither team could push through the opposing defense. Miles threatened once in the third quarter, but the drive stalled just inside the 30 and forced a 44-yard field goal attempt, which was missed.
But the defensive battle continued through the remainder of the third quarter, but as the clock wound down in the third period, the Wolves mounted a drive and as the quarter turned, Dickey and the UWG offense were sitting at the Miles 15. Three plays into the fourth quarter, senior running back
Brandon Lucas gave West Georgia a 24-0 advantage with a 1-yard touchdown.
After an exchange of punts, junior
James Dugan pinned Miles deep with a beautiful 55-yard punt, then senior defensive end
Zack Fore sacked the quarterback at the Miles 2 yard line. On the ensuing play,
Bobby Liggins broke free and picked up a tackle for a loss and the first safety for the Wolves since September 22, 2007 against Newberry, making the score 26-0.
The Wolves rushed for 296 yards on the night, led by Hinsley with 97 carries. Dickey was 10-for-19 through the air in the game and led the Wolves to hold the ball on the road in a hostile environment with 36 minutes on the game. On the defensive side, the Wolves had two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, with
Darrius Caldwell and
Jamaree James each forcing a fumble. Caldwell recovered his own forced fumble and Laronji Vason, who led the Wolves with six tackles, recovered James' forced fumble.
West Georgia moves to 2-0 on the season with Johnson C. Smith coming to Carrollton next weekend on Homecoming. Kickoff for that game is set for 2:00 p.m.
