Wolves trounce Panthers in final warmup

Box Score
Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves dominated the Clark Atlanta Panthers in nearly every phase of the game Saturday afternoon in Atlanta, as the Wolves moved to 4-0 for the first time since 2000 with a 42-2 victory.

West Georgia started quickly in the game, holding the Panthers to a quick three-and-out on the opening drive of the game. But a fumble on the ensuing punt forced the defense to work for three more plays before another CAU punt. The UWG offense took charge from there, marching down the field for 68 yards in just five plays to take a 7-0 lead on a 24-yard touchdown run from senior running back Seth Hinsley.

Hinsley was golden on that first drive, rushing three times for 54 yards and the score on the drive. Dallas Dickey added an 11-yard rush and Denarius Appling a three-yarder to add to the total.

That was the first of three scores for the Wolves in the opening quarter, as Brandon Lucas added a two-yard score and Emmanuel Taylor hooked up with Earvin Anumgba for an eight yard touchdown to give West Georgia an early 21-0 lead. But that wasn't the only scoring of the first quarter, as a Clark Atlanta punt back the Wolves up to their own one, and a fumble in the end zone led to a safety, making the score 21-2 heading to the second quarter.

On the Wolves' first drive of the second quarter, Hinsley broke into the end zone for the second time in the game, capping a 10-play, 77-yard drive. On that march, Dickey's arm was the culprit, as the junior was 3-for-4 for 48 yards, hitting passes of 16, 17 and 15 yards throughout the drive. The score was the final one of the second quarter, as the Wolves took a 28-2 advantage into the locker room at the break.

Coming out for the second half, the Wolves took the ball down the field on a nine-play, 48-yard drive that was set up by a 34-yard kickoff return from Appling. But the Wolves didn't get to the end zone easily on this drive, as the Panthers forced a punt. James Dugan took the snap and the fake was on, as the punter rambled 18 yards for a first down and new life. Five plays later, Brandon Lucas had his second score of the day, a six-yard run to make the score 35-2.

After an exchange of punts and the turn of the quarter, the Wolves opened up the final period with a score on third play of the fourth quarter. This one was a 49-yard strike from Taylor to freshman receiver D.J. Ezell, marking his first career collegiate touchdown in his third start of the year.

The UWG defense was again there to play, and the Wolves have not given up an offensive touchdown since the third quarter of the opening game of the year. West Georgia allowed just 156 yards of total offense on the day, including 119 on the ground, with safety Jamaree James leading the way with seven tackles. The Wolves had three sacks on the day, including one each from Alex Armah, Dalvon Stuckey and Nathan Teter.

The Wolves rushed for 234 yards on the day and passed for 182 yards. Hinsley led the way on the ground with 14 carries for 105 yards and a pair of scores. It was the fourth time in his career that he has rushed for 100 yards or more. Shaq Hall led the way receiving, catching three passes for 73 yards. Dickey was 7-for-12 for 117 yards and Taylor was 3-for-3 for 65 yards and two touchdowns.

West Georgia moves to 4-0 while Clark Atlanta falls to 1-3 on the season. The Wolves will begin Gulf South Conference play next week against West Alabama, taking on the Tigers at 2 p.m. in University Stadium next Saturday.
