Carrollton, GA - For the second straight night, the West Georgia Wolves went into a game with first place on the line against another team tied for the top spot in the Gulf South Conference. And for the second straight night, the Wolves prevailed, this time in Spragins Hall on the campus of Alabama Huntsville, holding off a late run from the Chargers to take an 85-80 victory.
How it Happened: The Wolves came out firing on all cylinders in this one, as West Georgia outscored the Chargers by a 10-0 margin over the first four minutes of the contest. But Alabama Huntsville came prepared to defend Spragins Hall as well, outscoring the Wolves 32-21 over the final 16 minutes of the first half, to take a 32-31 lead into the locker room.
Both teams went scoreless for a long stretch late in the first half, as the score remained stuck wiith UAH leading 30-28 for the bulk of the final five minutes of the period. But with a minute left in the half, junior
Deontre Brown broke the scoreless streak with a three-pointer that put the Wolves up 31-30. In the final minute, UAH missed a shot which gave the Wolves a chance at the last shot, but a turnover led to a Charger dunk as time expired, giving Alabama Huntsville a one-point halftime lead. Brown led the Wolves with 10 points in the opening half.
In the first eight minutes of the second half, the Wolves pulled a bit of a repeat from the first half, as UWG outscored Alabama Huntsville 24-8 in that span, and West Georgia's two scoring leaders got hot.
Alex Abreu started first, scoring five straight points to get into double-figures, then Deonta Stocks started to heat up. He scored five straight to get into double-figures as well.
But Alabama Huntsville came roaring back, cutting the Wolves' lead to 71-62 with 5:05 left in the contest, but a flurry of buckets put the Wolves back ahead by 15 with a 77-62 lead with just over three minutes left. In the final two minutes, Alabama Huntsville cut the UWG lead to eight with 1:31 left and a pair of free-throws from Deonta Stocks gave West Georgia another 10 point lead with 1:15 left in the game.
UAH cut the lead to four at 82-78 with 23 seconds left in the contest, but
Alex Abreu hit his free-throws in the waning seconds to give the Wolves an 85-80 victory. The win moves UWG to 15-4 overall on the year and 10-4 in GSC play.
West Georgia had four double-digit scorers on the night, led by Stocks with 20 points in the game, followed by
Alex Abreu with 18.
Deontre Brown scored 13 and Jovany Austin added 11 for the cause. As a team, the Wolves shot 86 percent from the free-throw line, and up until the final minutes of the game, UWG was shooting 92 percent from the charity stripe.
Odds and Ends:For Stocks, tonight marked his 40th start for West Georgia and the 40th time that he scored in double-fiugres ... With seven minutes left in the game,
Deontre Brown had played 20 minutes, more than any other game in his career ... the Wolves and Chargers combined for 64 three-pointers in the game ... the win in Spragins Hall is the first for UWG since the 2003-04 season, when UWG Hall-of-Famer Darnell Miller was a junior.
What it Means: West Georgia continues to move up in the Gulf South Conference standings, as three of the six teams that were at the top of the league have now fallen in the last week. Two of those have lost to the Wolves, as West Georgia is currently on a three-game winning streak. UWG has also won six of their last seven. Depending on the outcome in Florence, Ala. tonight, UWG will at least be tied with Shorter for first place in the conference at the end of the evening. West Alabama is playing on the road at UNA, and if the Tigers can pull off a road victory, there will be a three-way tie for the top spot in the GSC.
Up Next:West Georgia takes on the Lions of North Alabama in Flowers Hall on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff time is set for 4 p.m.. (EST)
