Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves, fresh off of a solid 24-point victory over Lee on Saturday night in the first game back after the holiday break, head for the final chapter in the early part of the season to take on the Shorter Hawks in Rome, GA. The road game marks the sixth in the first seven games where UWG has been away from Carrollton.
UWG vs. Shorter
The Wolves' shortest road trip of the season commences on Monday evening, as UWG takes on Gulf South Conference newcomer Shorter. The Hawks have been NCAA Division II provisional members for the past two years and received full status this past summer, making the 2014-15 season the first where Shorter is available for the postseason, including awards and tournaments. This will be the sixth meeting between the two teams, with West Georgia holding a 4-1 lead in the series. Historically, West Georgia vs. Shorter has been a high-scoring affair, with the winner of each game in the series scoring at least 78 points with only one game where the winner scored less than 80.
UWG Breakdown
The Wolves are coming off of a huge 96-72 victory on the road at Lee this past Saturday, West Georgia has been solid on the road this season, with five of the nine victories coming away from Carrollton thus far. UWG is 9-2 overall and tied for second in the GSC with a 4-2 record in conference play. The Wolves are the top scoring team in the conference, averaging 88.0 points per game.
Shorter Breakdown
The Hawks are one of now seven Gulf South Conference teams with at least four victories in league play this year thus far. Shorter is coming off of a big home victory over West Alabama on Saturday evening, taking a nine-point, 78-69 victory over the Tigers. The Hawks are the second-best scoring team in the GSC, averaging 86.2 points per game through the first 13 games of the year.
Matchup to Watch
When the Hawks and Wolves get together, the scoring generally comes to life, and given the two teams are averaging nearly 90 points per game each, there is an expectation that will continue Monday. Expect to see fireworks between Dedric Ware of Shorter and Deonta Stocks from UWG, as the pair are the top-two scorers in the Gulf South Conference this season. Ware averages 19.5 points per game, while Stocks puts up 20.8 per contest.
