Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves are right on the cusp of hosting a first round, GSC Tournament game on Super Tuesday, but standing in the way on Saturday afternoon will be the Lee Flames. The provisional Division II member squad comes to The Coliseum for the second time this year, with the men's game set for 4 p.m.
Keys to the Win
The win over Shorter Thursday was a huge step forward for the Wolves, and there were three major keys. Two of those have been in short supply for UWG, as the Wolves outrebounded Shorter, just the fourth time that has happened this season. And the Wolves did a masterful job on defense with the third-leading scorer in the GSC, Dedric Ware, holding him to just eight points when his season average of 17.3 points per game
Nation Leading
Senior
Thomas Higginbotham seems determined to go out with a bang this season, as he comes into the 22nd game of his senior year leading the nation in assist-turnover ratio. The Snellville native has 74 assists and 18 turnovers, a ratio of better than 4.53. He looks to become the second UWG athlete among all sports in the last two years to lead the nation in a single category. Last year, Nicole Yancey led the nation in walks for the UWG softball squad, and Higginbotham has a good shot of doing the same in assist-turnover ratio this year.
More Rankings Coming
This week's games are of the utmost importance for the Wolves, as next Wednesday marks the release of the first Regional Rankings. West Georgia has been ranked nationally for one week this season, but it is the regional rankings that determine NCAA tournament bids at the conclusion of the year. The top-8 teams will make the tournament, but Gulf South, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic and Sunshine State Conference champions receive an automatic bid, which means UWG must be in the top-5 at the end of the year to feel secure in a regional ranking.
Keys to the Win - Pt. 2
There were three huge keys to the Wolves' 99-87 victory over Shorter on Thursday evening, beginning with a return to sharing the ball. Three UWG players had at least five assists in the game and five players scored in double-figures for the first time since January 15. In fact, in the last three games, no more than three players scored in double-figures. The Wolves were also able to hit their free-throws in the game, going 21-of-27 from the charity stripe.
In the GSC
The GSC standings are still a mudbog at the top, but things are starting to shake out as the season winds down and we approach the GSC tournament. The tournament field is nearly set, as North Alabama needs to win or Valdosta State needs a loss to put UNA in as the eighth team. The seedings are a different story altogether, as there are still five teams that are in a potential spot to take the top spot on Super Tuesday. That means that any of the three teams that are currently tied for first place (UAH, UWG, UWA), could still end up playing on the road in the first round. The Wolves' path to host is simple, keep winning, because the top of the league is that competitive.
