Carrollton, GA - A flurry of activity in the final 13 minutes of Saturday afternoon's game between the West Georgia Wolves and Lee Flames nearly saw the UWG men's basketball squad come back from a 14-point deficit, but in the end, the Flames prevailed with an 89-84 victory at The Coliseum on Valentine's Day.
Sophomore Deonta Stocks scored 20 of his game-high 33 points in the second half of Saturday's game as the Lithonia native was called upon heavily after and the Wolves' second-leading scorer
Alex Abreu fouled out with just under three minutes left in the game. But his effort fell just short, as the Wolves missed their last six shots of the contest in the final minutes.
The Wolves came out hot on both sides of the ball after the opening tip, outscoring the Flames 19-12 in the first eight minutes of the contest. At the 5:39 point of the first half, Stocks hit a jumper that put West Georgia up by 10 points at 36-26 and the Wolves were rolling. Over the final minutes of the half, Lee would outscore the Wolves by an 18-7 margin, taking their first lead of the game at 43-42 with 2:13 remaining in the first half. That was right at the beginning of a dry spell for the Wolves, as UWG was scoreless over the final three minutes of the period.
That dry spell continued until the 17:33 mark of the second half, when Abreu hit a layup that stopped the Lee run. In all, the Flames outscored West Georgia 42-28 over the span of 12:49 between the end of the first half and the middle of the second.
Down 68-54 with 12:50 remaining in the game, the Wolves began to claw their way back into the contest, and over the next 10 minutes, caught the Flames at 78-78 with 3:20 remaining in the game. Just under a minute later, Abreu fouled out with the Wolves trailing by a point at 79-78, and the game was a dogfight over the final three minutes. In the end, the Flames hit four straight free-throws with less than 16 seconds left to seal the victory.
West Georgia falls to 17-7 overall and 12-7 in Gulf South Conference play with three games remaining in the 2014-15 season. The Wolves are currently tied for third place with Union, but the Bulldogs hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over UWG. West Georgia will be on the road next weekend, taking on West Florida on Thursday evening, followed by a battle at Valdosta State on Saturday.
Stocks led all scorers with 33 on the night, followed by a season-high for
Deontre Brown, who scored 20 points in the game. Abreu was the only other UWG player in double-figures in the contest with 13 points.
