Carrollton, GA - For the first time in school history, the West Georgia men's basketball seniors will not be playing in their last game on their home court on Senior Night, but Thursday night will have a playoff game feel as the Wolves go head-to-head with the West Alabama Tigers at The Coliseum on Senior Night. Tipoff for the game is set for 7:30 p.m.
GSC Tournament Watch
West Georgia comes into the game currently in third place in the Gulf South Conference, with West Alabama just ahead in second place. The game has major implications for the postseason, beginning with Super Tuesday and the GSC tournament. The winner between the Tigers and the Wolves will finish in second place in the GSC standings, receiving the second seed in the Gulf South Conference tournament, which begins on Tuesday. Both teams have secured a host spot as one of the top four seeds in the tournament, but West Georgia could finish as low as fourth depending on what happens between Shorter and Lee on Thursday.
Regional Rankings - NCAA Tourney Watch
Despite a pair of victories on the road this past weekend, the Wolves dropped one spot in the rankings, as Alabama Huntsville used a pair of wins over ranked opponents to leapfrog West Georgia in points and move into third place in the regional rankings. That makes for additional massive implications to Thursday's game, as the Wolves are currently fourth in the region, two spots ahead of West Alabama. Eight spots are available at the NCAA South Region tournament, and the GSC, SSC and SIAC each receive an automatic bid to the regional for their conference champion, so the Wolves need a win to stay in a more secure spot to reach the NCAA tournament for the second time under head coach
Michael Cooney.
This Week's Game
It's only happened three times this season, but the West Georgia Wolves face an opponent Thursday evening that holds a 1-0 lead on them in the season series, as the West Alabama Tigers come to town with second place in the Gulf South Conference on the line. The Tigers took the initial matchup back on January 17, hitting a three-pointer with five seconds left in Pruitt Hall to upend the Wolves, 73-71. The winner of tonight's game is assured the second seed in next week's Gulf South Conference tournament.
UWG Breakdown
The West Georgia Wolves will come into the final two games of the season looking to continue its breakneck speed offensive attack, but to supplement with a solid mix of defense as well. The Wolves lead the Gulf South Conference in scoring, averaging 86.6 points per game on the year and are in 10th place in the NCAA Division II stats. Sophomore Deonta Stocks also leads the GSC in scoring individually, putting up more than 22 points per game. Stocks now has 1,000 career points at UWG, as he became the 10th player in school history to reach that milestone last Thursday evening.
A Dangerous Trio
Senior points guards
Alex Abreu and Thomas HIgginbotham are an amazing 1-2 punch at the point for the Wolves. The pair have combined for 197 assists on the season, and Abreu alone has 117. He is in the top-50 in the country in assists per game and Higginbotham is second in the nation in assist-turnover ratio. Abreu and Stocks also are the top two three-point shooters in the GSC in terms of shooting percentage.
Matchup to Watch
The matchup to watch will be between Deonta Stocks and whoever UWA head coach Allen Sharpe chooses to guard Stocks. The Tigers are a fairly new roster this season, and few of the current players has seen Stocks at game speed on the floor. The secondary matchup is on Abreu, who scored 23 in the first meeting.
