Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves, winners of four straight in Gulf South Conference play, will put first place in the GSC standings and that winning streak on the line Thursday evening at The Coliseum, as the 24th-ranked Wolves play host to the Union Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m.
UWG vs. Union
Despite Union being the new dog in town, the Bulldogs are handling themselves very well in their first year of full competition in the Gulf South Conference. The series between the Wolves and Union has been a close one thus far, as in five meetings between the two teams, West Georgia holds a slight 3-2 advantage. The most recent meeting came just before the holiday break in December and featured a solid effort from Corieon Pearson and Marterrace Brock, as the pair combined to score 47 of Union's 95 points in a 95-87 victory.
UWG Breakdown
The Wolves are one of the hottest teams in the Gulf South Conference, winning seven of their last eight games and West Georgia has not had a losing streak this season. The Wolves have also been solid on the road this season, boasting a 9-1 record at home, but a 7-3 spot away from Carrollton as well. That includes the past two games, where West Georgia swept the northern Alabama run, beating Alabama Huntsville last Thursday and UNA on Saturday. Deonta Stocks continues to lead the GSC in scoring with 21.5 points per game and is 17th in the country.
Union Breakdown
The Bulldogs come into the game tied for third place in the GSC standings, but Union has cooled off a little since a 10-2 start to open the season, going 5-4 in their last nine games. Union is the third-best scoring team in the league, averaging 78.9 points per game, but is also the 4th-best in the defensive department, allowing just 73 points per game through the first 21 games.
Matchup to Watch
Two places the Wolves will need to focus on defense on Thursday evening will be to slow down Corieon Pearson, who scored 26 points the last time the two teams met, and the other is with Ashanti Day. The 6-6 sophomore had a double-double with 12 pointis and 12 rebounds in the first meeting, and the Wolves will need to cut one of those numbers back to be able to stay on top of the GSC.
