Wolves fall to CBU in GSC action

Carrollton, GA - The competition in the second half of the Gulf South Conference portion of the West Georgia men's basketball schedule continued to be fierce Saturday afternoon at The Coliseum, as the Christian Brothers Buccaneers handed the Wolves their second straight loss, 81-72.

The loss drops the Wolves into a three-way tie for second place in the GSC standings with Shorter and West Alabama. One week ago, the Wolves and Shorter were tied for the conference lead, but both have since lost two straight. West Alabama is the third team in that tie after winning two straight and Alabama Huntsville also won two straight and now sits alone atop the GSC.

West Georgia opened the game with three straight points, but then a 5-0 run put CBU into the lead. The Wolves would tie the game on five separate occasions over the final 17 minutes of the first half, but could never regain the lead. The Bucs led by as many as 11 points in the first half after a Drew Hildreth tip-in with 15 seconds left, but Alex Abreu cut the CBU lead to eight with his second halftime buzzer-beater of the year.

The second half was a tale of two halves, as the Bucs built a 16-point lead in the first 10 minutes of the period. But in the final 10 minutes, the Wolves cut the CBU lead to as little as six points at 75-69 on a three-pointer from Deonta Stocks with 1:05 left in the game, but the Bucs hit their free-throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

Stocks led all scorers with 34 on the night and Abreu chipped in 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the cause. The biggest night, however, came from the CBU side, as Sidy Saul had 24 points to lead the Bucs and pulled down 19 rebounds as well.

West Georgia falls to 16-6 on the season and 11-6 in GSC play, while CBU moves to 12-9 on the year and 9-8 against conference competition. The Wolves return to action on Thursday evening in what looms as a huge showdown as Shorter comes to town in a battle for second place in the GSC.
