Carrollton, GA - The 2014-15 men's basketball season came to a close on Sunday evening in Lakeland, FL, as the West Georgia Wolves lost a hard-fought 84-81 game to the top-ranked Florida Southern Mocs in the second round of the Division II NCAA tournament.
The Wolves and Mocs were tied at the half and this one came down to the wire, with Florida Southern holding the lead for much of the game.
Alex Abreu led all scorers with 30 points in his final game in a West Georgia uniform. The Bayamon, Puerto Rico native had an outstanding final game for the Wolves, hitting 6-of-9 from three-point range and 8-of-8 from the free-throw line, pulling four rebounds and dishing five assits.
How it Happened: The first half saw two outstanding offensive teams struggle from the field, as heading to the halftime break, neither the Wolves or the Mocs had broken into the 40% range. The difference in the game came at the three-point line, where West Georgia was 6-of-17 in the first halff compared with 4-of-15 from Florida Southern.
But despite the cold shooting late in the first half, the opening of the game was red hot, as Florida Southern jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first 1:25 of the contest. West Georgia responded, scoring five straight in the next minute, and at the 17:35 mark of the half, the score was tied 10-10. Over the next seven minutes, Deonta Stocks picked up two fouls and the Mocs built as much as an eight-point lead before the Wolves started a comeback.
West Georgia took its first lead of the game at the 5:57 mark with a three-pointer from
Zach Taulien, and over the next nearly four minutes, the two teams traded baskets and the lead multiple times. At the 1:47 mark,
Taylor Cochran hit his second three-pointer of the game, giving the Wolves their biggest lead of the game thus far at 41-37. But in the final minute, FSC scored twice, including a putback at the buzzer to send the game to the half with the score tied at 41-41.
The Wolves never led in the second half, but pulled to within one point of the Mocs multiple times in the period. Florida Southern extended their lead to as many as nine with four minutes left in the game, but West Georgia rallied in the final four minutes.
With 37 seconds left, Abreu hit his second three-pointer of the final four minutes of the game, pulling West Georgia to within three points in the final minute of the contest. Florida Southern hit three free-throws over the next 20 seconds, and Abreu hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to make the final 84-81.
Deonta Stocks was second on the team on the night with 18 points, including hitting 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. He closes out his second season with West Georgia with 1,135 career points, scoring in double-figures in 52 straight games. He also finishes the year with 681 points, the fourth-best single season in school history.
West Georgia finishes the year with a 22-9 record, tied for the best single-season record in the
Michael Cooney era. His 2011-12 team that reached the regional was 22-9, but this year's squad won his first NCAA tournament game in his career at the helm of the program, as well as his first share of the Gulf South Conference regular season championship.
