GSC Tourney ends for UWG in Semis

Carrollton, GA - The 2015 VisitSpaceCoast.com Gulf South Conference Tournament came to an end for the West Georgia Wolves on Friday evening, as the #2-seed Wolves fell 91-85 to the #3-seed West Alabama Tigers in the GSC tourney semifinals at the Pete Hanna Center on the campus of Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.

Alex Abreu and Deonta Stocks led the Wolves offensively on the night, with Abreu carrying most of the load in the final three minutes of the contest after Stocks fouled out of the game. Abreu ended the game with 26 points, hitting 9-of-16 from the field and leading all scorers in the contest. Stocks scored 12 points early on and ended the game with 19 points as the Wolves' second-leading scorer.

The Wolves opened the game with a 9-0 run, with Stocks scoring five of the nine points and things were rolling for UWG in the first three minutes of the game. West Alabama then began to claw their way back into contention, tying the game for the first time at the 11:58 mark at 16-16. The remainder of the first half was a see-saw battle that saw eight ties, and West Alabama's Deontaye Ewing hit a jumper with nine seconds left in the period to give UWA a 44-42 lead heading to the locker rooms at halftime.

Coming out of the break, another storyline in the game came to the forefront as UWA scored six straight in the first two minutes after halftime to take a 50-42 lead. During that same span, the Wolves missed three free-throws. West Georgia ended up with a 15-of-25 night at the charity stripe compared with West Alabama's 31-of-37. The Wolves, a 73 percent free-throw shooting team on the year, shot just 60 percent from the line on the nignt.

Then it was time for the Wolves to work their way back into the game, and over the next five minutes, head coach Michael Cooney's squad chipped away at the UWA advantage, and at the 13:26 mark, took the lead at 55-54 on a layup from Abreu.

UWA retook the lead just a minute later and over the final 12 minutes of the contest, the Tigers' lead fluctuated between 10 and three points, as West Alabama continued hitting shots whenever the Wolves would get close. With three minutes left, a Jovany Austin layup cut the lead to three, and over the final three minutes of the game, the Tigers kept UWG at that length to advance to the GSC Finals on Saturday.

West Georgia will now await the NCAA Tournament Selection show on Sunday to determine their location for next week's NCAA South Regional. The Wolves entered the weekend as the third-ranked team in the South Region.
