Football Preview: The Mississippi College Game

Carrollton, GA - It's Homecoming Week for the University of West Georgia, with the Wolves looking to right the ship in front of likely the largest crowd of the 2016 season at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at University Stadium. UWG has lost three straight coming into the week, including a 31-7 setback last week at the hands of West Alabama, which snapped an 18-game winning streak at home for the Wolves.

This week's opponent, Mississippi College, has made noise in the conference this season, but has yet to break through for a victory. The Choctaws are coming off of a narrow 42-41 loss at Valdosta State last weekend.

SAYLES PRODUCES POINTS
Against West Alabama, the defense again produced points for the Wolves in the form of the third interception return for a touchdown this year. This one came via cornerback Marcus Sayles, who took an Austin Grammar pass 81 yards for the first score of the game for either team.

INJURIES IN 2016
The West Georgia Wolves have had a rough go this year, especially in the area of injuries. Head coach Will Hall's defense had three regular starters in street clothes this past weekend, and three other offensive regulars at the beginning of the year either didn't play or played limited snaps against West Alabama this past weekend.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 16th meeting between West Georgia and Mississippi College, with the series dating back to when MC was previously a GSC member. The two teams have met in each of the last two seasons, with UWG winning both, including a 38-21 win in Clinton, MS in the 2015 campaign.

CURRENT STATE
West Georgia football comes into week eight in a position that is vastly different than the past two years. The Wolves are in the midst of a three-game losing streak, the first since the 2013 season for West Georgia. This year's streak began at North Alabama, followed by a loss at Valdosta State and at home this past week to West Alabama, which is the same run of teams from the 2013 streak, in the same order

ANOTHER RECORD IN SIGHT
Senior defensive end Dylan Donahue became West Georgia's all-time career sack leader this past weekend with his 11th sack of the season and the 23rd of his two-year career at UWG. He is also two sacks away from tying the single-season record for sacks, which was set two years ago by Darrius Caldwell, who had 13 in 2014.

THE COACHES
West Georgia's coach is Will Hall, who is in his third season at the helm of the UWG program. The Wolves are 28-8 under Hall, including 5-3 in the postseason. In his sixth year as a head coach, Hall is 53-18. In his third season at Mississippi College, John Bland is 5-22 through the first seven games of the 2016 campaign, and he has an overall record of 80-48 in 11 seasons as a head coach.

TURNOVERS CAUSE TROUBLE
Hall and his staff will be looking for the Wolves to hold onto the ball this week. In the current losing streak, West Georgia has committed 13 turnovers while forcing only six. The Wolves have also given up 981 yards passing in that span. The UWG defense has allowed 10 touchdowns in the past three games, while the offense has produced just six, including zero offensive points against West Alabama.

SAYLES AND LEGGETT HAWKING
Marcus Sayles has been a ball hawk this season, and with his third interception of the year this past week against West Alabama, the senior has moved into the top-10 in the Gulf South Conference in that category. Sayles and A.J. Leggett both have three interceptions on the year and each has returned one for a touchdown. The picks put them into a 10-way tie for the top spot in interceptions in the Gulf South Conference.

PICKING OFF
Valdosta State, West Florida and West Georgia each have two players among that top-10 in interceptions. The Argos, in their first season of full competition, have three players with three interceptions on the year. West Georgia is fourth in the GSC in interceptions this season with 11 and the Wolves lead the league in interceptions for a touchdown with three.

TWO WAYS ABOUT IT
There is a history of two-way players in college football, but that has been much more rare in recent years. Alex Armah has stepped into that role this season, starting at both defensive end and tight end in his senior campaign. He has 17 tackles on the year, including 4.5 for a loss and also has four receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown.

RECEIVING THREAT
Qa Walker leads the Wolves in receiving this season with 31 receptions for 445 yards and two touchdowns. Walker is a deep threat and moved into 11th place in the all-time record book for receiving yards this past weekend. He needs 70 yards to move into the top-10 among all-time receivers at UWG, with 1,255 yards thus far.
