Carrollton, GA - The UWG's Wolves returned to the win column Saturday, scoring a 31-23, homecoming win over Mississippi College. Two of the leaders of that winning effort were honored Monday by the Gulf South Conference.
The conference named senior safety
Jeff Fulwood the GSC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance UWG's win. Also, the league named quarterback
Willie Candler as GSC Freshman of the Week.
For Fulwood, Saturday's performance marked a return to full time duty. The senior from Miami, Fla., had missed most of the last four games with injury. Against MC, Fulwood led UWG with nine total tackles, including one for loss. He also had a fourth quarter pass interception that helped seal the Wolves' victory.
Candler's honor came in his first ever start as a collegian. The redshirt freshman from Atlanta completed 14-of-23 passes for 181 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. Also, his passer rating was 170 for the afternoon.
With Monday's honors Fulwood and Candler are the fourth and fifth UWG players to receive league player of week plaudits this season.
Dylan Donahue was named the league's top defensive player following the Wolves' win over Delta State, and
Marcus Sayles received top special teams honors for the same game. Also claiming league special teams honors was
Devontae Jackson for his performance in the Wolves' win over Albany State.
West Georgia is now 5-3 on the season. The Wolves return to action this Saturday in Rome vs. Shorter. Kickoff time is 1:30 p.m. in Barron Stadium.
