Carrollton, GA - The Battle for the Peach Basket returns to south Georgia, as the West Georgia Wolves and Valdosta State Blazers meet on the field at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium in Valdosta, Ga. The basket has changed hands in each of the last two seasons, as VSU won two years ago in Valdosta before the Wolves won in 2015. The Wolves and Blazers will renew the rivalryy at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m.
For the first time since the close of the regular season in 2014, the West Georgia Wolves have fallen out of the national top-10 after a narrow 24-23 defeat at North Alabama this past weekend. The Wolves fell to 4-1 on the year and 1-1 overall with the loss.
This week takes the Wolves to south Georgia for the second time this season, with UWG taking on Valdosta State in the first return to Bazemore-Hyder Stadium since the 2014 playoffs. VSU comes into the game with a 3-1 overall record after a 48-10 win over Kentucky State this past weekend. The Blazers are also 1-1 in Gulf South Conference play.
DONAHUE STEPS CLOSER TO HISTORY
Senior defensive end
Dylan Donahue is tough to slow down, and came one step closer to the career sacks record with his third straight game of three sacks this past weekend. The Montana native now has 10 sacks on the season and 22 career sacks at UWG. He is second in the nation in sacks, averaging 2.0 sacks per contest and is .5 sacks behind the NCAA Division II leader, Lucky Baar of McKendree.
ROAD WARRIORS
Saturday marks the final leg of a tough three-game stretch for the Wolves that featured three road trips. West Georgia last played in University Stadium on September 17, and have since taken on Albany State and North Alabama on the road. UWG is 1-1 on the three-game road stretch.
OFFENSE BREAKS OUT
The West Georgia offense made a big appearance this past weekend at North Alabama, as the Wolves put up 468 yards of total offense in the game. UWG is balanced on the year, averaging 144.2 yards rushing and 225 yards passing on the season. The Wolves had 182 yards rushing against UNA and 286 yards through the air.

On the West Georgia side, the offense has had flashes of brilliance this season and has had plenty of scoring help from the defense. The Wolves have scored at least 23 points in every game thus far, with a breakdown of seven touchdown passes, five rushing touchdowns, two interception returns for a touchdown, a punt block for a touchdown and a kickoff return for a score as the plays which have resulted in a touchdown.
THE COACHES
West Georgia's coach is Will Hall, who is in his third season at the helm of the UWG program. The Wolves are 28-6 under Hall, including 5-3 in the postseason. In his sixth year as a head coach, Hall is 53-16. In his first season at Valdosta State, Kerwin Bell has a solid 3-1 record through the first four games.
SACK ATTACK
The Wolves' defensive front has been stellar in the past two weeks, delivering on 16 sacks in the last three games. West Georgia sacked North Alabama quarterback Jacob Tucker six times this past weekend, including three from
Dylan Donahue. It was the third straight game that Donahue has had three sacks.
A NEW CHALLENGE
The Wolves' defense will be faced with a new type of offensive threat in this contest. For the first four weeks, West Georgia has gone head-to-head with teams that were either fairly balanced offensively or heavy in the running game. Valdosta State averages 420.5 yards per game on the year thus far, with 328 of those yards coming through the air. The Blazers have more than 1,200 yards passing through four games this year.
SERIES HISTORY
While Valdosta State holds a sizeable advantage in the overall series with West Georgia, winning 23 of the 35 matchups thus far, the Wolves have been on top during the Will Hall era. VSU won the first in 2014 in Valdosta, but West Georgia has won the last three, including two games in the playoffs. The last meeting was in the second round of the 2015 NCAA playoffs, with West Georgia using a late scoring drive to take a 27-20 victory at University Stadium in early December last year.
