PLAYOFFS ON THE LINE
The path to the playoffs is quite simple for both teams: win and you will be in. Florida Tech enters the week at sixth in the Super Region 2 rankings, while the Wolves are 8th. The top seven teams reach the playoffs, meaning a win for either team this week would go a long way to reaching the 2016 postseason.
CANDLER GARNERS SECOND-STRAIGHT FRESHMAN HONOR
With two starts under his belt, UWG redshirt freshman quarterback
Willie Candler is already racking up honors, as he has two victories and two GSC Freshman of the Week honors. Candler has a quarterback rating of 181 on the year and was 9-for-13 for 164 yards and two scores last week, as well as running 10 times for 51 yards.
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the fourth meeting between the two schools, and each of the meetings to date have been hotly contested affairs. West Georgia won the first 28-14 followed by a 49-35 victory in the second meeting. Last year, Florida Tech got their revenge, winning 28-26 in the first meeting in Melbourne.
More Notables
* The path to the playoffs is fairly clear for the two teams meeting on the gridiron at University Stadium. Win, and the prospect of the playoffs remains open. Lose, and the season will end for UWG in Pensacola next week or in Melbourne for Florida Tech.
* The past four seasons have taken the 2016 senior class on a tremendous ride, and Saturday will be the culmination of that experience at University Stadium on Senior Day. This group of seniors is already in the record books, tied for the most wins over a four year span (36), and a win in the final two weeks of the season will secure that historical spot, as this class would become the winningest in school history.
* That run includes back-to-back Super Region 2 championships and two straight trips to the NCAA Semifinals, something that no team at UWG before 2014 had accomplished. This senior class won the first playoff game in Division II school history back in 2014, then went one better by hosting the first playoff game in University Stadium history in 2015. The winning trend continued, as this senior class then led the Wolves to a victory in that contest, a come-from-behind win over Valdosta State in last year's second round.
* This class includes two school record holders in defensive end
Dylan Donahue and cornerback
Marcus Sayles. Donahue set the school season and career records for sacks earlier this season and is close to the Gulf South Conference single-season record for sacks as well. it is hard to even fathom what Sayles has done in his career, as the Alpharetta native has 13 career kick blocks, including three this season.
* Sayles alone has helped produce 12 points for the Wolves in 2016, as he had a punt block that was returned by Laronji Vason for a touchdown earlier this year and he also scored a touchdown on an interception return for score against West Alabama.
* Donahue took a page out of Sayles' book this past week against Shorter, as the Montana native broke through to block a punt at Shorter that went out of the back of the end zone, resulting in a safety for the Wolves.
