UWG Football Preview: The Catawba Game

Carrollton, GA - Another season in the trenches begins for University of West Georgia head football coach Will Hall and his Wolves on Saturday, as second-ranked UWG puts its 15-week streak of top-10 rankings on the line against 22nd-ranked Catawba to open the 2016 season on Saturday.

This marks the second straight season that the Wolves and Indians have played in the opener, with West Georgia winning last year at Catawba with a 44-13 victory. The two teams have met just twice in the history of the series, with the other coming on a 28-24 victory for the Indians in the 2000 playoffs.

West Georgia went on to a 12-2 record in the 2015 season, winning the Gulf South Conference for the first time since 2000 and a Super Region 2 championship for the second-straight year and advancing to the NCAA Semifinals before bowing out on the road to eventual champion Northwest Missouri State.

Catawba took the loss and turned it into a positive, posting a record of 9-3, winning the South Atlantic Conference and advancing to the NCAA Playoffs as the third seed. The Indians hosted in the first round of the playoffs, falling to Tuskegee by a 26-16 final.

Hall begins his third season at the helm of the UWG program, and holds a 24-5 record overall in Carrollton, including 19-3 in regular season play. Overall, he enters his sixth season as a head coach with a 49-15 record, and his teams have either advanced to the playoffs or won a Gulf South Conference championship in each of his seasons as a head coach.

Catawba is coached by Curtis Walker, who is entering his fourth season as the head coach of the Indians. In that time, Catawba has won at least six games in every season and has a 21-13 overall record.
