Football Preview: The North Alabama Game

Carrollton, GA - After a quick stop in the final non-conference battle of the 2016 regular season, the West Georgia Wolves return to the fire of Gulf South Conference play on Saturday, taking on the North Alabama Lions on the road at Braly Municipal Stadium in Florence, Ala.

The Wolves are coming off of an upset scare on the road this past weekend, moving to 4-0 with a 27-23 victory over the Albany State Golden Rams. The Lions moved to 2-1 with a 45-7 blasting of West Alabama on the road this past weekend. The Wolves and Lions shared the GSC title last season and are both 1-0 heading into this weekend's showdown.

JACKSON CONTINUES TO IMPRESS
Devontae Jackson earned Gulf South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors, becoming the second-straight UWG player to take the award. Jackson is fifth in the conference in all-purpose yards this season, averaging 125.8 per game.

WALKER STEPS INTO HISTORY
Qa Walker had six catches for 74 yards against Albany State on Saturday, one of his biggest days at UWG in terms of receptions. The junior had one touchdown reception that was his step into UWG history, as he became the 14th receiver to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in a career. He has 12 career touchdown receptions, and needs 12 more to tie Roscoe Pounds' school record.

GAUNTLET SCHEDULE
This is the middle week of a three-game road swing for the Wolves and marks the fourth-straight opponent that reached the 2015 playoffs. North Alabama beat Newberry in the first round of last year's playoffs, then lost to Tuskegee. The Lions are 2-1 this season, with their only loss coming to 2015 Division I FCS runner-up Jacksonville State.

BATTLE OF CHAMPS
The defending Gulf South Conference champions will meet in the fifth week of the 2016 season with much on the line. Both the West Georgia Wolves and North Alabama Lions come into the game ranked nationally, and the winner of this week's game will have a leg up in the race for the 2016 GSC championship.

UWG DEFENSE vs. JACOB TUCKER
For the second-straight week, the Wolves' defense will go up against a quarterback who is both his team's leading passer and rusher. Senior Jacob Tucker has been a solid player for four seasons at UNA and his offense has produced more than 40 points in each of the last two weeks.

UWG SCORING IN 2016
On the West Georgia side, the offense has had flashes of brilliance this season and has had plenty of scoring help from the defense. The Wolves have scored at least 23 points in every game thus far, with a breakdown of seven touchdown passes, three rushing touchdowns, two interception returns for a touchdown, a punt block for a touchdown and a kickoff return for a score.

THE COACHES
West Georgia's coach is Will Hall, who is in his third season at the helm of the UWG program. The Wolves are 28-5 under Hall, including 5-2 in the postseason. In his sixth year as a head coach, Hall is 53-15. Legendary coach Bobby Wallace is the head coach at North Alabama, in his fifth season of his return to coaching in Florence, Ala.

THE DRIVE FOR FIVE
The Wolves' defensive front has been stellar in the past two weeks, delivering on 10 sacks in the last two games. West Georgia sacked Delta State quarterback Tyler Sullivan five times in week three, then took down Albany State signal-caller Caleb Edmonds five times this past weekend.

DONAHUE CONTINUES TO SHINE
Senior defensive end Dylan Donahue has six of those 10 sacks, and the UWG defensive front will be going up against a UNA squad that allowed five sacks to West Alabama last weekend. Donahue now has six sacks on the year, which is good for fourth nationally and the Wolves as a unit have 14 combined sacks, which is good for a tie for 18th in all of Division II football.

JACKSON ALL-PURPOSE and BIG PLAYS
Sophomore Devontae Jackson had the highlight of the game for the Wolves this past weekend. With UWG backed up inside their own 20 on third and long, Jackson took a handoff around the left side. He looked as though he was bottled up, but the Marietta native never stopped moving. He juked and ducked defenders, then broke free for a huge 40-yard gain that moved the Wolves to midfield with less than six minutes to go, giving UWG breathing room in a tight ballgame.
