Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. - In a clash of top-10 teams in Pensacola, Fla., the fourth-ranked West Georgia Wolves rode the back of All-American Devontae Jackson (Wheeler) to a 27-7 victory over 10th-ranked West Florida at Blue Wahoo Stadium.
Jackson had a career-high 33 carries for 224 yards and two touchdowns on a night where he broke the West Georgia career rushing record and led his team to a road victory over a top-10 opponent. The win pushes West Georgia to 7-0 for the first time since the 2000 season.
The West Georgia Wolves jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first 16 minutes of play in one of the biggest games of the year thus far, largely on the back of senior running back Devontae Jackson, who rushed 16 times for 109 yards in the first half of play. West Georgia picked up a pair of Omar Cervantes field goals in the first quarter, with the redshirt freshman nailing a 24-yard attempt and a 32-yard attempt.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Wolves were equally good, holding the Argos to just 191 yards in the first half, including just 41 on the ground. Defensive end Chad Price came through with a big play on special teams, blocking an Austin Williams field goal attempt to keep the Argos off the board in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, junior linebacker Korie Rogers picked off UWF quarterback Sam Vaughn, giving Willie Candler and the UWG offense the ball at their own 45-yard line. Two plays later, Candler connected with junior tight end Taylor Turner for a 34-yard touchdown to give West Georgia a 13-0 lead. Vaughn and the Argos came right back, hitting a pair of 30+ yard passes, including a 35-yard touchdown pass to Ishmel Morrow to cut the Wolves' lead to 13-7 heading into the locker room at the half.
In the second half, it was all West Georgia at Blue Wahoo Stadium, as the Wolves outscored West Florida by a 14-0 margin in the second half. The defense was monstrous in the period, allowing 104 yards in the half and stopping West Florida twice on fourth down.
Jackson started the second half off on a big note, as the senior broke free for a 19-yard run that gave him 3,407 career rushing yards. That passed Nick Price for the all-time rushing lead at West Georgia. Later in the third quarter, Jackson ran in for a five-yard touchdown to give the Wolves a 20-7 lead in the third quarter. That put him in a tie for second in all-time touchdowns with 27.
As time was winding down and the Wolves holding onto a 13-point advantage, Jackson put the game out of reach with a 45-yard touchdown. On that carry, he went over 200 yards, becoming the first back at West Georgia since Price against Southern Arkansas in 2000 to rush for 200 yards in a game. He ended the night with 224 yards, which is the fourth-best single-game rushing effort in school history.
On the defensive side of the ball, Korie Rogers led the effort with seven tackles and an interception on the evening. Trevon Simmons was solid as well, collecting three tackles, two pass breakups and picking off a UWF pass in the end zone.
West Georgia moves to 7-0 on the season and 4-0 in Gulf South Conference play, while West Florida falls to 5-2 and 3-1 against league opponents. The Wolves return home next week to face the West Alabama Tigers for Homecoming 2018.
