CARROLLTON, Ga. - Defense was on display on Saturday afternoon at The Coliseum, and it was the West Florida defense that prevailed as the homestanding West Georgia Wolves fell 67-53 to the Argonauts in Gulf South Conference play.
Both teams struggled in the first half on the offensive end of the floor, as each team hit just nine shots from the floor in the period. West Florida hit 7-of-9 from the free-throw and five three-pointers compared to just two free-throws and a three-pointer from the Wolves.
The Argos raced to an early 7-0 lead, then West Georgia responded with a 15-7 run to take a short 15-14 lead with 8:13 left in the opening period. Shortly after that, West Florida retook the lead and outscored the Wolves 16-6 in the final eight minutes of the half to take a 30-21 lead into the locker room at the break.
Seth Brown-Carter, who led UWG with 16 points, powered the Wolves early in the second half as West Georgia cut the UWF lead to 34-29 in the first five minutes of the final period. That was a close as UWG would get, as the Argos led by as many as 19 in the second half.
Brown-Carter and Oronte' Anderson led the way in the scoring department, putting in 16 and 11, respectively. The Wolves will be back in action next Thursday at Union in Jackson, Tenn.
