CARROLLTON, Ga. - The West Georgia Wolves snapped a four-game losing streak on the road Thursday evening, shooting 56 percent from the field with five players in double-figures to take an 89-85 victory over the Union Bulldogs at Fred Delay Gymnasium in Jackson, Tennessee.Â
Freshman
Keshawn Heard was stellar in his first start for the Wolves, scoring 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field as he was one of five players in double-figures.
Kadeim Jones poured in 24 to lead the Wolves while
Michael Zabetakis scored 18 points and pulled 13 rebounds for his first career double-double.
Seth Brown-Carter added 17 points and
Oronte' Anderson had a double-double as well, scoring 12 points and dishing out 12 assists in the victory.Â
The first half of Thursday's game was the Jones and Heard show. The pair combined for 20 points, including six points and four rebounds from Heard in his first collegiate start, in the first 17 minutes of the game leading West Georgia to a 40-35 lead with 3:32 left in the opening period. The first five minutes were a neck-and-neck battle between the two squads and Union held a 14-11 lead with 15:20 left in the first half.Â
A dunk from
Seth Brown-Carter at that point sparked an 18-4 run for the Wolves as West Georgia led 29-18 with just over 10 minutes left in the period. Over the final 10 minutes, the Bulldogs flipped the script with a 24-13 run that ended with a 42-42 tie headed into the locker room at the break. Jones led the Wolves with 14 points and West Georgia shot 56 percent from the field.Â
In the second half, the Bulldogs came out firing on all cylinders at first with Tyree Boykin leading the way with 26 points on the night to lead all scorers. The three-point shooting from Union was tough to keep up with, as the Bulldogs outscored the Wolves 37-32 over the first 15 minutes of the second half, leading 79-74 with just over five minutes left in the game.Â
The Wolves went on a run at that point, taking control over the final five minutes of the contest and outscoring the Bulldogs 15-6 in that span to pick up the victory. With just under a minute to play, Anderson nailed a jumper that put UWG up 87-83, but Union responded with two free-throws with 34 seconds left. As time was running down on the shot clock, Brown-Carter sealed the victory with a dunk.Â
West Georgia moves to 5-12 on the year with a 3-6 record against Gulf South Conference competition. The Wolves will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, taking on the Christian Brothers Buccaneers in Memphis, Tenn.Â
