1/25/2020 4:31:00 PM

Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. - The West Georgia Wolves led for the bulk of the game on Saturday afternoon in Canale Arena in Memphis, Tennessee, but the Wolves came up just short, falling 80-75 to the Christian Brothers Buccaneers in Gulf South Conference action.

The first half was a defensive struggle between the two squads, as the teams combined for just 26 points in the first 12 minutes of the contest. The Wolves shot 29 percent from the floor in that span and CBU was at just 23 percent. West Georgia picked up the pace over the next four minutes, going on a 7-2 run that pushed the Wolves ahead at 20-15 with just over five minutes left in the period.

Over the final eight minutes of the half, the two teams played to a 20-20 draw as the Wolves and Bucs went into the locker room at the break knotted at 33-33. Oronte' Anderson and Kadeim Jones led the first-half effort with nine points each and Anderson added four rebounds for the cause.

In the first six minutes of the second half, the Wolves went on a 20-12 run and with 14:08 left in the game, West Georgia held a 53-45 lead. Jones was the catalyst for that run, scoring 11 points in the first six minutes of the period. Freshman Keshawn Heard was also a big positive in the run, scoring eight points and moving into double-figures for the second consecutive game since becoming a starter.

The next two minutes continued to see the Wolves move in a positive direction with a 7-0 run that push the lead out to 60-45. Jones started the run with a three-pointer, then sophomore Michael Zabetakis hit a pair of layups to give West Georgia a 60-45 lead and force a timeout from Christian Brothers to regroup. The timeout worked, as the Bucs went on an 8-0 run in just over a minute, cutting the UWG advantage to 60-53 with 10:52 left in the game.

At that point, it was CBU's time to go on a run, as the Bucs went on a 13-9 run over the next seven minutes, cutting the West Georgia lead to just 69-66 with 3:40 left to go at the final media timeout of the game. Christian Brothers, using the home court advantage with a rowdy crowd, continued to come back, taking the lead at 74-73 with 1:24 left in the game.

The Wolves put up a three-pointer from Kadeim Jones with just under a minute to play and the shot was off, but a hustle rebound and attempted putback from Seth Brown-Carter drew a foul. The junior buried both shots to give the Wolves a 75-74 lead before a pair of free-throws from CBU's Brad Miller pushed the Bucs back on top with 28 seconds left in the game. The Wolves attempted two shots in the final 28 seconds, but came up on the short end of an 80-75 result.

Jones led the Wolves with 23 points in the loss, followed by Brown-Carter with 16, Anderson with 12 and Heard with 10. West Georgia falls to 5-13 on the year and 3-7 against league competition. UWG will host Union next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at The Coliseum.
