Second Half Comeback Falls Short

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The West Georgia Wolves erased a 17-point halftime deficit Thursday night at The Coliseum, but a pair of free-throws from the Union Bulldogs with less than a second remaining in the game derailed the effort as the Wolves fell 81-80 in Gulf South Conference action.

Junior Kadeim Jones went toe-to-toe with Union sharpshooter Tyree Boykin in this one, with Boykin putting up 33 points in the game and Jones with 25. Boykin hit six of the Bulldogs' three-pointers in the contest to lead all scorers. The reigning Freshman of the Week, West Georgia's Keshawn Heard, had his best night of the year, hitting 8-of-9 from the field en route to a career-high 18 points.

The Wolves jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first three minutes of the game, but West Georgia went cold from the field while the Bulldogs heated up. Union outscored the Wolves 46-23 over the final sixteen minutes of the first half to take a 49-32 advantage into the locker room at the break. Union hit 61 percent from the field in the opening half while the Wolves shot 40 percent. Boykin led all scorers in the opening period with 23 points, forcing adjustments from UWG head coach Dave Moore and his staff.

West Georgia began to chip away at the Union lead, cutting the advantage to 11 in the first 10 minutes of the period. Trailing 71-62 with 4:40 left in the game, the Wolves went on a 6-0 run in the span of just over a minute, cutting the Bulldog lead to 71-68 with 3:18 left in the game.

With 30 second left in the game, the Wolves got the ball, trailing 79-77 after another shot from Boykin. Oronte' Anderson came off a screen and buried a three-pointer with 10 seconds left to give West Georgia an 80-79 lead. Boykin came down and took a shot, but a foul was called in the scrum after the miss, sending Union's Lidonta Hicks-Gentry to the line. He hit both free-throws, ending the game and the comeback.

Anderson was the third of the UWG players in double-figures on the night, scoring 13. West Georgia falls to 5-14 on the year with a 3-8 record against GSC competition. The Wolves will be back in action on Saturday, taking on the Christian Brothers Buccaneers on First Responders Day at The Coliseum. All First Responders in attendance on Saturday will receive one free ticket to the game.
