CARROLLTON, Ga. - Add another name to the list of former UWG stars playing for an NFL team this fall, as Malik Henry signed on Wednesday, September 30 to be on the practice squad with the New Orleans Saints.
Henry transferred to West Georgia in the fall of 2018 and quickly became one of the top receivers in the Gulf South Conference. He played in nine games as a senior, hauling in 30 passes for 407 yards and seven touchdowns on the year. As West Georgia was a frequent stop for NFL scouts during the 2018 season, the 49ers had plenty of opportunities to see what Henry could do in person, then he was extremely impressive at the UWG Pro Day in March. That sparked interest from several teams, including the 49ers, who worked out Henry in a private workout just before the 2019 NFL draft.
That led Henry to sign with the San Francisco 49ers, and after being released by the 49ers just before camp completed, he spent six weeks on their practice, before signing with the practice squad of the Indianapolis Colts last December.
Henry becomes the fifth former UWG player to be a part of an NFL roster in the 2020 season. Tyrell Adams (Texans), Alex Armah (Panthers), and
John Hurst (Bucs) are all on the 53-man roster for their respective teams.
Auzoyah Alufohai is on the practice squad with the Texans and Henry is with the Saints.
