CARROLLTON, Ga. - Five UWG players scored in double-fissures on Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop-King Centre in Rome, Ga., as the West Georgia Wolves snapped a five-game losing streak with an 83-78 victory over the Shorter Hawks in Gulf South Conference basketball action.
Sophomore
Michael Zabetakis scored 11 of his team-high 19 points in the second half and pulled 11 rebounds for his second-straight double-double and fourth overall. As a team, the Wolves fished out 14 assists on the day, led by four different players with three assists.
Shorter came out firing in this one, racing to an early 12-5 lead in the first three minutes of the game. West Georgia clawed their way back into the contest and a Zabetakis layup with 12:48 left in the first half gave the Wolves a 15-14 lead. A three-pointer from Shorter 20 seconds later put the Hawks back up, and that's where the game would stay for the bulk of the first half.
With 2:12 left in the first half,
Oronte' Anderson hit a pair of free-throws that out the Wolves on top 36-34. After those free-throws, the Wolves would not trail again in the game. West Georgia went on to lead 41-39 at the half, the pushed the lead out quickly in the second.
In the second half, the Wolves led by as many as 14 points with 4:27 left in the game, but Shorter kept fighting. Over the final four minutes, the Hawks hit a flurry of baskets, cutting the UWG advantage to just three points with 10 seconds left. The Wolves hit their free-throws in the final minute of the game to seal the victory.

West Georgia moves to 7-19 on the year and 5-13 in Gulf South Conference play. The Wolves will be back in action on Thursday evening, taking on Auburn-Montgomery at The Coliseum on Recreation night. Any local recreation player with a jersey on will receive free admission to Thursday's game.
