CARROLLTON, Ga. – Smiles were plentiful Wednesday in the football offices at the University of West Georgia. The smiles came as head coach
David Dean announced an impressive 2020 recruiting class on National Signing Day.
UWG revealed an impressive class of 27 high school standouts. All are from Georgia or Alabama, and three are from the immediate West Georgia area.
"We feel like we addressed our need for increased depth on both the offensive and defensive lines," said Dean of his recruiting class. The coach added, "Skill-wise, we added good size and speed, especially speed. Also, we're very excited about the addition at kicker and punter."
UWG's signing class includes seven offensive linemen, and six defensive line prospects. The remainder of the class features players hoped to bolster the Wolves on both sides of the football.
Locally, the Wolves continued what has become a National Signing Day tradition under Dean: signing top local players. That group includes defensive back
Ben Fortson of Bowdon High School, along defensive end
Trey Loveless and offensive lineman
Beau Chaffin from Haralson County High.
A common thread in this year's signing class is that most of the Wolves' newcomers will come to UWG from winning programs. Dean says it's no accident, "We love to recruit from success programs. The players are used to winning, used to playing long seasons, and they have the work ethic it takes to be successful."
While UWG coaches are still working to put the finishing touches on this phase of 2020 recruiting, the program's next main focus will be on spring practice. Drills will begin in March with a spring game to be held in April.
West Georgia begins its 2020 football season on Thursday, September 3, in Jefferson City, Tenn., vs. Carson-Newman. The Wolves' complete 2020 schedule, and season ticket information, will be released soon.
