CARROLLTON, Ga. - A 42-point outburst in the second half was not enough for the West Georgia Wolves to overcome a halftime deficit at The Coliseum on Wednesday evening, as the Wolves fell 69-65 to the West Florida Argonauts in the first Gulf South Conference game of the season.
The Wolves (2-4, 0-1 GSC) struggled to find the bottom of the net in the first half, hitting just 28 percent from the field in the period. In the second half, West Georgia shot 45 percent overall, but the Argos (6-1, 1-0 GSC) matched that to keep the lead for most of the game. Five Wolves scored in double-figures in the contest, with
Seth Brown-Carter leading the way with 15.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the early moments of the game, and Brown-Carter buried a three-pointer at the 14:43 mark of the period to give the Wolves an 8-6 advantage. That was the last basket UWG would score for the next four minutes as West Florida went on an 11-0 run to take a 17-8 lead. THe UWF lead continued to grow and stayed in double-digits for a five-minute span before a jumper from
J.J. Barnes cut the advantage to 32-23 with 1:42 left in the half. A pair of buckets in the final minute pushed the advantage back out for the Argos to 36-23 at the half.
West Georgia began to whittle away at the Argos lead over the course of the second half, and with five minutes left in the contest, a
Kadeim Jones free-throw cut the lead to just four at 56-52. The Wolves continued to push and a
Jalen Sasser layup with 2:50 remaining sent the crowd into a frenzy as the game was tied at 60-60 at that point. The Argos would outscore the Wolves 9-5 over the final three minutes to take the victory.
In addition to Brown-Carter's 15 points,
Michael Zabetakis added 13, Jones 11 to lead the UWG offensive. Sasser and
Deng Nhial added 10 points each in the game and Sasser led the Wolves with eight rebounds. West Georgia will continue Gulf South Conference play this weekend on the road, taking on Valdosta State in Valdosta on Saturday evening. That game was originally scheduled for a women's game at 2 p.m. and a men's game at 4 p.m., but has been moved to 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
