CLINTON, Miss. – The UWG men's basketball team secured their fourth straight win in spectacular fashion after a
Seth Brown-Carter game winner put West Georgia over Mississippi College 59-58 on Monday night.
West Georgia used a big second half where they shot 46% from the field and forced 11 Mississippi College turnovers in route to their fifth conference win.
Both teams came out firing to begin with Mississippi College taking a 17-11 lead. After a quick offensive start, the Wolves offense went cold, and the Choctaws took advantage as Mississippi College extended their lead to nine with 5:26 left in the half. UWG made just two field goals for the remainder of the half which allowed Mississippi College to take a 10-point lead into the half.
It was a tough first half for West Georgia as they shot 37.5% from the field and 10% from three in the half, contributing to the 10-point deficit.
The Wolves continued to struggle offensively to start the second half as they shot 2-6 from the field to begin which allowed the Choctaws to take their largest lead of the game at 41-28. Down 13 with 14 minutes left to play, UWG started to find their offensive rhythm as a 10-2 run, sparked by a
Jalen Sasser three-point play, cut the deficit to five. This started a sequence of runs from both teams which led to a six-point Mississippi College lead with 1:11 left.
J.J. Barnes went on a personal 5-0 run to make it a one-point game with seven seconds left and quickly fouled the Choctaws to send MC to the free throw line. The Choctaws missed the front end of a one-and-one which was rebounded by
Seth Brown-Carter who raced down the floor and made a contested layup that beat the buzzer to win it for the Wolves.
Deng Nhial led the Wolves with a team-high 11 points and three steals while
Jalen Sasser scored 10 points on a perfect 4-4 from the field. UWG will be back in action on Wednesday when they head to Cleveland, Mississippi for a conference matchup against Delta State that's set for 8:30 p.m.
