Sunday Soccer Spoiled by Lady Choctaws

CARROLLTON, Ga. – One goal was not enough on Sunday afternoon as the UWG soccer team fell 2-1 to the 21st-ranked Mississippi College Lady Choctaws in Gulf South Conference action in Carrollton.

West Georgia (5-5-1, 3-3-1 GSC) played the visitor's tough, putting up nine corners to Mississippi College's eight and had just one fewer shot on target than Mississippi College. The Lady Choctaws also outshot the Wolves 18-14 on the afternoon.

Mississippi College (8-2, 5-1 GSC) got the scoring started in the 32nd minute, when Eduarda Silva took the ball down the field herself, and put the shot away in the top left corner to give the Lady Choctaws a 1-0 lead, which they would take into halftime.

West Georgia would not fold, however, as Delaney Kewin took a cross from Lauren O'Neill and used her head to find the back of the net, equalizing the game at one a piece in the 50th minute.

Just seven minutes later, Beatrice Currie cleaned up a deflected shot, putting the Lady Choctaws up 2-1 with 30 minutes left to play.

The Wolves had several chances late in the match, including a Catherine Reeves 88th minute shot, but a nice diving save from keeper Sara Maleski effectively ended any chance the Wolves had of equalizing the match.

The goal from Kewin was the first of the Kennessaw native's career.

The Wolves are back on the road next week, travelling to Christian Brothers on Friday afternoon, beginning at 6p.m.
