Homestand Continues as UWG Women Host Clark Atlanta

Wolves and Panthers Meet for Brunch Bonanza

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The second of three consecutive home games is on deck for the UWG women's basketball team as the Wolves host Clark Atlanta at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

West Georgia (1-2, 1-0 GSC) welcomes the Panthers to The Coliseum for a non-conference tilt after winning their last outing, 62-59, over Montevallo in the Gulf South Conference and home opener.

Now, the Wolves have to put the elation of their first victory of the new season behind them and focus on a Clark Atlanta (1-1, 0-0 SIAC) team that has never won a game over UWG in Carrollton.

"I think our players know, that as happy as we were about Wednesday's win, that we have got to get better, and we still have a lot of things to improve on," said head coach Joanna Reitz. "We spent yesterday and today working on those things and preparing for Clark Atlanta who is a really tough opponent on Saturday, so we're looking forward to it."

West Georgia is 18-1 all-time against Clark Atlanta and 10-0 all-time at home, and to slow down Clark Atlanta and get win number 19 in the series, the Wolves will have to keep Corriana Evans at bay.

"She's a great player, a strong athlete who is great at getting to the basket and great on the boards," Reitz said of CAU's leading scorer.

Clark Atlanta's offense likes to run a fast-paced style of offense and enters the game averaging 69.0 points per game while West Georgia's offense averages 55.3 per contest through three games.

"They would love for tomorrow's game to be a track meet. They want to get to the basket as much as they possibly can," Reitz added. "But they are capable of hitting threes. They showed that against Johnson C. Smith so we've got to do a good job keeping them out of the paint and off the free throw line."

The Wolves had a freshman show they can be that 20 points a night player against Montevallo, with forward Aliyah Washington scoring 21 points to go with eight rebounds and four steals.

That, coupled with 15 rebounds from senior Peace Okeke, and the Wolves have a pretty solid front court that can demand a presence in the paint. Against Montevallo, West Georgia had the advantage on the glass and in the paint, and that will be key again on Saturday against Clark Atlanta.

One key to making sure that happens, according to Reitz, is discipline.

"Defensively, discipline in our box outs, nobody leaking out early, and everybody makes a play on the ball," Reitz concluded. "And then offensively, following our principles of who's crashing the boards, who's getting back at safety, so we've got to rely on our habits tomorrow."

Tip-time is set for 10 a.m. from The Coliseum. In memory of UWG Athletics staff member Josh Waldrep, UWG is offering free admission by using the promotional code "JOSH" on the UWG Athletics Ticket Portal.
