Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. - University of West Georgia Baseball is off to the best start since 2018 after a 14-10 victory over the Lynn Fighting Knights on Friday afternoon in Boca Raton, Florida.
The Wolves (5-0) put on another great hitting display, finishing with 17 hits overall for the game. Every starter had at least one hit on the afternoon, and Ladner, Wortham, Fink, Logsdon, and Webb all left the yard for West Georgia.
After singles by
Brody Wortham and
Anthony Calabro to lead off the game,
Sam Ladner gave the Wolves a 3-0 lead very early in the contest. Lynn came right back with a two-run home run to make it 3-2 after one inning of play.
Pitcher
Jackson Hodnick made his second start of his 2022 campaign, after pitching 5 innings of scoreless four-hit baseball against Kentucky State last weekend. The Fighting Knights gave Hodnick a much more difficult time in the Sunshine State, as Hodnick went 4 innings, giving up nine hits and eight runs, while walking two and only striking out one. In his fourth and final inning, Hodnick would give up five runs, three of which came with two outs in the inning.
The second inning was where the Wolves opened the floodgates of scoring. West Georgia would end up scoring six in the second frame, thanks to a
Logan Fink three-run blast and an RBI double from
Jackson Webb. After two innings, West Georgia led 9-3.
In the fourth, a pair of RBI's from
Edgar Cruz and Calabro would extend the Wolves' lead even further. The Fighting Knights would not go away, however, as a big fourth inning kept them within striking distance.
Jeff Smith would go to
Jenson Barker out of the bullpen to start the fifth, but after back to back hits and a fielder's choice turned into a throwing error, the Wolves would go back to the bullpen for
Andrew Smith. Smith would limit the damage to just two runs, and kept the lead at 11-10 going into the sixth.
In that sixth inning, two solo home runs by
Jackson Webb and Wortham would put the Wolves back up three with only three innings left to play.
Both teams were held scoreless until Ladner came up with two outs in the top of the eighth and crushed his second home run of the day. That score would put the Wolves up 14-10, just needing six outs to secure the win.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Wolves were one out away from the victory, when the umpires called the game due to visibility issues at the park. The game was ruled over after eight innings.
Andrew Smith turned in a masterful performance out of the bullpen, going 3.2 innings, allowing one hit, zero runs, three walks, and four strikeouts.
The Wolves are back in action tomorrow when they travel to West Palm Beach, FL to take on the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish. First pitch is set for 1pm.
