PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWG men's basketball team got their 11
th conference win of the season on Wednesday after an 83-81 comeback win over the West Florida Argonauts.
After trailing by 15 at halftime, West Georgia (14-12, 11-8 GSC) outscored West Florida (17-10, 11-9 GSC) 48-31 in the second half, resulting in a two-point UWG win.
West Florida blitzed West Georgia to begin as their leading scorer, Daniel Sofield, jumpstarted a 12-2 run four minutes into the game. The Wolves had no answer for the Argonauts' offense, falling behind 25-8 which marked the largest lead of the half for UWF. UWG slowly started to find their rhythm as a three from
Seth Brown-Carter cut the deficit to nine with 2:31 left in the half. In response, West Florida went on an 8-2 run to end the half, sending us into the break with the Argonauts up 50-35.
In the first half, West Georgia shot 50% from the field and 20% from three but got out-rebounded by eight, while allowing West Florida to shoot 65.5% from the field and 55.6% from three.
The Wolves completely flipped the script in the second half, as UWG marched out to a 22-9 run to cut the deficit to two before a
Quinton McElroy layup tied the game at 59 seven minutes into the half. West Georgia would tie the game four more times until the Wolves took their first lead of the game courtesy of a
Seth Brown-Carter layup at the 6:05 mark. UWG had all the momentum as West Georgia held West Florida scoreless for five straight minutes, resulting in a 10-0 run that put the Wolves up 78-70 with 2:59 left to play. After a bucket from UWF,
Kadeim Jones buried a clutch three to put UWG up by eight with 46 seconds left, putting the game out of reach.
Seth Brown-Carter finished with a game-high 22 points, six rebounds, and four assists while
Kadeim Jones added 15 points. West Georgia will be back in action on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. when they host Valdosta State for the regular season finale.
