CARROLLTON, Ga. – Another weekend of Gulf South Conference volleyball awaits the UWG volleyball team and the Wolves find themselves on the road on Friday and Saturday against Shorter and Lee.
West Georgia (9-8, 2-3 GSC) hasn't played a road game since the GSC opener on September 13 and since then has went .500 in league play. The Wolves open the weekend against a Shorter (7-9, 202 GSC) team that most recently defeated Saturday's opponent, Lee, by a 3-1 final last Saturday.
The Wolves and Hawks enter Friday's contest with identical numbers as Shorter is sixth in the league hitting .176 and West Georgia comes in at .163 which ranks seventh in the GSC. In terms of kills, Shorter averages 11.5 per set while UWG puts down 11.0 per set.
Friday's matchup features two of the top-five middles in the league, as West Georgia's
Sanai Young ranks fifth in the league with 0.95 blocks per set while Shorter's Carrington Terrell averages 0.98 blocks per set.
The Hawks have won two consecutive matches over UWG, sweeping last year's series, although UWG had won three consecutive matches over Shorter prior to the 2021 season.
On Saturday, the Wolves trek to Cleveland, Tennessee to take on a Lee (2-14, 0-4 GSC) team that has lost nine straight contests and has only won one game on their home floor at Walker Arena.
Lee is 10
th in the GSC in hitting percentage with a .123 clip and defensively the Flames allow the highest opponent hitting percentage in the league at .262.
West Georgia continues to be near the top of the league in service aces, averaging 2.18 per set as a team. Two Wolves are in the top-five of the league leaders in that category as
Autumn Mayes is third with a 0.58 per set average and
Kelli Kaiser is fifth at 0.51 service aces per set.
UWG has won two consecutive games against the Flames, sweeping both matches by a 3-0 tally in 2021.
First serve on Friday is set for 6 p.m. while Saturday's contest begins at 2 p.m.
