CARROLLTON, Ga.- In what will be the first home game for the UWG women's basketball team since January 4, the Wolves are set to host The 24th ranked Union Bulldogs on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Gulf South Conference action.
"Anytime you can face a top-25 opponent on your home court, is a great opportunity for our team", mentioned head coach Joanna Reitz.
West Georgia (7-9, 6-7 GSC) enters the game on the heels of a road loss to Montevallo, 57-50, and is eager to get back to the friendly confines of The Coliseum.
Union University (13-3, 11-3 GSC) is coming off a four-day layoff, after defeating Mississippi College, 76-64, on the road last Saturday.
The Wolves and Bulldogs last met on November 26 where Union took a 79-49 victory after having six players score seven plus points.
West Georgia ranks ninth in the GSC in scoring, averaging 56.4 points per game on 38.5% shooting. Defensively, the Wolves are in the bottom half in the GSC sitting at Seventh on that end. Defensively, UWG allows 62.8 points per game. Junior guard Stephanie Torres is UWG's leading scorer, averaging 9.9 points per game.
As for Union, they have the top ranked offense in the conference, averaging 77.4 points per game on 45.9% shooting which also leads the GSC. Guard Shanique Lewis leads the bulldogs in scoring, pouring in 13.9 points per game, which is good enough for sixth in the conference.
"Lewis is versatile, she can score in a lot of different ways, she's a three level scorer, but what makes Union so good is that they have a very balanced scoring attack", said Reitz.
In order for UWG to win this game, they will have to limit Union's perimeter offense. Union leads the GSC in three pointers made with 168 and three point field percentage at 36.8%.
"I think that's number one on the defensive gameplan", Reitz continued. "They shoot a high percentage and they shoot a lot of them. We need to limit how many attempts they get off."
In terms of team rebounds, Union has the edge, averaging 33.8. while the Wolves average 32.1.
Wednesday is also Faculty and Staff day at The Coliseum. All staff and faculty are invited to attend.
Tip-off for Wednesday's game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
