Box Score VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of West Georgia Volleyball team got back in the win column on Tuesday after sweeping the Valdosta State Blazers in The Complex.
Freshman
Allison Bowser made her first career start and made an immediate impact as the outside hitter recorded a career-high 10 digs, helping West Georgia (12-12, 6-6 GSC) hold Valdosta State (15-12, 7-5 GSC) to a .098 hitting percentage, which propelled the Wolves to their sixth conference win of the season.
"So proud of our team and our resiliency over these last couple of weeks," said head coach
Kara Hellmann. "To be on the road in a big rivalry matchup and pick up a sweep is huge for our group."
UWG came out of the gate fast, taking a 9-3 lead to begin before VSU woke up and scored the next three points. Moments later, the Wolves extended their lead to 13-6 after Bowser capped off a 4-0 run with an ace until Valdosta State halted West Georgia's momentum once more, this time with an 8-1 run to tie the game at 14. From there on out, the two team traded blows before back-to-back kills from Zoë LaBreche won the set for UWG, 25-23.
The Blazers won the race to 10 in the second set, taking a 10-8 advantage to start. West Georgia quickly switched the script on VSU as another kill from LaBreche sparked a 4-0 run, giving the Wolves a 12-8 lead midway through. Much like the theme of the match, Valdosta State countered as the Blazers used an 8-3 run to take their largest lead of the set at 18-15. With UWG down by three, a solo block from
Taylor Allen ignited a massive 7-0 run to give West Georgia a 22-18 lead late before a kill from LaBreche and a pair of attack errors from Valdosta State clinched the set, 25-21 for the Wolves.
Set three was tight all the way through, with UWG holding a 14-12 lead midway through after a kill from Bowser. Back-to-back points from VSU tied the game at 14 and began a sequence of the teams trading points until a kill from
Sanai Young and an attack error from the Blazers gave West Georgia a slim 19-17 lead. A couple of plays later, the Blazers took a 22-21 lead after a block from Jojo Smith and Ava Young. Down by one late, Bowser scored three of the next five points, winning the set 25-23 for the Wolves.
LaBreche led the way with 13 kills, while Allen recorded nine kills on a .391 hitting percentage. Along with her career-high 10 digs, Bowser picked up a career-high four kills and a career-high three aces.
