MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A late inning comeback after a rough first inning fell just short on Sunday as the UWG softball team lost the rubber game of their weekend series at Christian Brothers, 12-10 in Memphis.
West Georgia (6-7, 1-2 GSC) fell behind by six after an inning and trailed Christian Brothers (5-4, 2-1 GSC) by seven after five innings before cutting the final deficit to two and leaving the bases loaded in the seventh.
The Wolves had eight hits in the contest to 13 from CBU, while the Bucs committed five errors to UWG's one. West Georgia's pitchers walked a combined nine batters in the loss.
It wasn't the start the Wolves hoped for in a decisive game three, as the Bucs struck for six runs in the bottom of the first, chasing UWG's starter Calli Harrison.Â
But the Wolves slowly began chipping away at the deficit, pushing across three runs in the third inning. The first came from a leadoff home run by Megan Waites, and the second was Tamia Young scoring on a Rylee Green sacrifice fly. An error by CBU allowed the third run to score, cutting the deficit in half.
It was Waites again in the fourth, as the freshman homered to left center and scored Marissa Thompson and made it a one-run game, with CBU clinging to a 6-5 lead. It was the first multi-home run game for a UWG player since R.J. Janke had two against Christian Brothers in April of 2023.
CBU then responded with five runs, all with two outs in the fourth, scoring on three hits, three walks, and an error to make it an 11-5 lead, and then made it 12-5 with a single run in the fifth.Â
Waites picked up two more RBI in the sixth to cut the deficit to 12-7, then Blaire Bizette tripled in two runs and scored herself on a wild pitch, making it a two-run game at 12-10.
The top third of the order had seven of UWG's eight hits including a three-hit, five-RBI game from Waites. Young and Bizette each had two hits in the loss.
Calli Hardison was charged with the loss after allowing the six first inning runs.
West Georgia returns home next weekend for a Gulf South Conference series against Shorter. It is set for a Friday night start from University Softball Field.
