CARROLLTON, Ga. - Following one of the best defensive seasons in UWG history in his final campaign of college football, David Hoage has made UWG history by being named a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award.
The Buck Buchanan Award honors the national defensive player of the year in FCS college football. Hoage becomes the first player in UWG's Division I, FCS era to be named a finalist for a National Award.
Hoage, a graduate student out of Denver, Colorado, transferred to UWG for his final season of college football and in just 11 games in the red and blue, tied a UWG record for single-season tackles for loss with 20.0.
"David has been an absolute nightmare for offenses. His skill, effort and knack for the ball is rare," said head coach Joel Taylor. "He has been a key contributor to our defense not only as a player, but as a leader as well. Only wish I could coach him one more year."
Hoage finished the season ranked third on the team in total tackles with 62 while his TFL average of 1.82 per game ranks second in all of FCS football.
Beyond those numbers, Hoage ranked third in the United Athletic Conference with 8.5 sacks while adding seven quarterback hurries and three forced fumbles.
As a unit, Hoage anchored a defensive line that helped UWG rank third in the UAC and 22nd nationally in rush defense.
Hoage is one of 30 finalists for the award which is in its 31st season. The award is named for legendary defensive lineman Junious "Buck" Buchanan, who starred at Grambling State as part of his Hall of Fame career. Past Buchanan recipients include Dexter Coakley, Rashean Mathis and Jared Allen.
