MACON, Ga. - The UWG softball team only got five innings in on Wednesday night at Mercer, but it was enough for the homestanding Bears as UWG fell 4-3 in Macon.
West Georgia (3-2) led going into the fifth inning, but Mercer (3-2) came out swinging and scored two runs early to take a lead before rain ended any hopes for a UWG comeback.
Mercer went up 1-0 after an inning as the Bears scored the game's opening run on four walks. Calli Hardison was forced into early relief, getting the Wolves out of any further trouble.
Single runs in the next three innings coupled with good work in the circle by Hardison gave UWG the lead at the halfway point. The Wolves' second inning run came on a walk and a pair of errors. In the third, two singles and an error loaded the bases before Makayla Register picked up an RBI on a productive out. Kristen Fowler doubled to lead off the fourth, later scoring on an RBI single by Megan Waites.
The Bears got their deficit to one with a sac fly in the fourth and then after a scoreless top half, Mercer led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and a home run to take a 4-3 lead. Three batters later, the weather deteriorated to an unsafe level and the game ended in the fifth with the Bears leading by one, and the score was official.
West Georgia had just four hits, with Waites recording two. Calli Hardison was charged with the loss.
UWG is now idle until February 21 when the Wolves travel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to compete in UNC's tournament. The Wolves open that four-game weekend with a Friday afternoon contest with Maryland.
