CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Game one of the Carolina Classic did not go West Georgia's way as the UWG softball team dropped the first of three games on the campus of UNC to the Maryland Terrapins by a 7-2 decision.
It was West Georgia's (3-3) first ever contest against against a Power Four team, and the Wolves held their own until a four-run sixth by Maryland (5-7) created separation that ended up being the final margin.
Maryland took an early lead by drawing a pair of walks from Sims and then a timely single brought both runners in for a 2-0 lead.
The Wolves got a run on a Megan Waites RBI in the second, scoring Makayla Register, and then Register drove in a run in the third, tying the game at 2-2.
Sims, who didn't give up a hit in the second or third, gave up a third run in the fourth as Maryland took advantage of a leadoff walk, using a sacrifice bunt and another timely single to take the lead back at 3-2 midway through the contest.
In the sixth, the Terrapins tagged Sims for four runs on five hits, an error, and a walk, and left the bases loaded, but the damage was done. West Georgia would go down in order in the sixth and got two runners on in the seventh, but did not push across a run.
Offensively, the Wolves had just four hits with Waites and Register each recording one and an RBI. Sims was charged with the loss, giving up six earned runs and seven total over six innings of work. The Macon native was plagued with walks, surrendering eight free passes on the day. Jenna Samuel pitched a clean inning of relief, allowing one hit while striking out three in the top of the seventh.
The Wolves return to action tomorrow morning in Chapel Hill, taking on Wagner and Georgetown in the final day of the Carolina Classic. UWG starts the day with a 9 a.m. first pitch against Wagner.
